Hi, my dad is also a diabetic he just tested his sugar and got 25.9, i told him to wash his hands and try again and it just came up as 28. I said I want to call 111 but he's telling me not to and not worry about it. What should I do? He generally has sugar levels of 11 or 12 everytime he checks but he tells me not to worry about it. Please help.

Is he on insulin? As a T1, if I get a figure like that, I can bring it down with a correction jab. If he isn't, or doesn't know how much insulin to inject, I'd ring 111.

Good luck.

no he takes metformin although i dont think he even takes it as much as he's supposed to

For your own peace of mind, phone your 111 or 999 emergency numbers, it's better for your father to be safe than sorry...

This is way too high for a type 2 (I assume that type on the basis of medication) and far above his normal level. Although diabetic ketoacidosis is much less common in Type 2 it can happen. Try and convince him to call 111.

Does he have ketones testing strips? If so check them. If they are also significant he needs to call for help now. If he doesn’t and feels at all unwell he needs to call for help and advice now, not tomorrow.

Otherwise If you can’t get him to call watch the meter closely, do not eat anything with any carbohydrates for now, drink plenty of water, go for a walk (with means to call for help if required) and keep watching for levels to fall. If they don’t or if they rise call for advice.

Did he eat or drink anything that might have caused such a high number (sugar, grains, beer, flour based product, potatoes etc etc) Knowing that he did might be a little reassuring that it might lower in a short while.

Hi. Get him to immediately reduce his carb intake and have plenty of water. It sounds like he may often be high and take it as 'normal'. Is he over-weight or not? He does need to see the GP urgently or call 111 if the sugar level doesn't come down.

Thanks all for the advice, he checked again, right now its 21 so at the very least its going down, he's not really overweight and he told me he had some chocolate earlier whilst at work

Good news. Keep an eye on it for a few hours and make sure it keeps going down. It must have been a lot of chocolate for it to be that high this many hours later!!

He needs better control if this happens regularly. Get him on here! Or stay around yourself if he doesn’t join and learn how he can control it better. Just be aware you can lead a horse to water but if it won’t drink there’s only so much you can do....

These links should give you a general idea how most of us keep good control
