Hi my dad is diabetic has insulin. He is 76 and doesn't take his blood as often as he should. He wakes up in the night with sweats and also he is hungry and goes down about 5 to eat

I have noticed that over the past month or so his legs are getting bad. He walks slow, he doesn't tell myself or his wife anything about it but we can tell his legs are bad.. They never used to be..
He drinks a couple of bottles of beer at night and smokes a pipe. He won't stop as he says well am 76 years old smoked all his life so why stop now and he enjoys his pipe. I am really worried about his legs. He would t tell us about what gets said when he goes for his check ups, he keeps it to himself but I know he won't say nowt to the nurse. Any advice on what's causing his legs to be like this would be great

Well there isn't much you can do really Colin except be there for him and make sure he knows you care. He is probably in a downward spiral feeling unwell and hungry and thirsty but eating and drinking isnt helping much. It is a difficult one and he has to want to help himself but it sounds like he feels he doesn't want strife and struggle at his age so will just go with whatever gets thrown in his lap (I may be wrong).

The only thing I can suggest is you sit down and chat with him, may be over one of those beers.

Hi that for you reply

My dad is not the type to sit and talk about his condition, he just brushes it away and says he is fine.
Can his condition do this to his legs and if what causes it?
Also I was thinking of speaking to his diabetic nurse and asking her to speak to him next time he sees her

Diabetes can cause issues with the legs and feet, yes. But other medical conditions can too.

I think your idea of talking to his nurse is a good one. Let her know your concerns, then next time she sees him she can casually mention his legs and feet and take a look. That way they get checked but it will seem like just a normal, diabetic check.
