DAFNE Not available.......GRRRRRRRR

ANGRY as my hospital does not do a dafne course .....
Eraged as its a funding issue.....
Blood boiling being told to change my hospital to be able to get on DAFNE (excuse the pun)
Scared as my dsn who I consider a friend and teacher told me that my care is based around guesstimation..................

I am unable to do a dafne sorry but @"£$££"£$$$$ ..
Life changing control available for the lucky ones . When I consider my self and every other diabetic to be very unlucky being bestowed with the condition I now find my self and undoubtly countless others very very unlucky not to avail of this method of treatment. I have just came last in the race and been disqualifed for doing so......!!!!!!

Ok over reacting or am I ?
Any feel the same ....?
PS I understand dafne not to be a miracle just an understanding for better control , which with the laws as they are now I will not understand...
I am so enraged that I am going to ask for a refund and give my diabetes to the health minister.
Wonder if his/her hospital has dafne bet you it would in no time...

Its 4.15am and I am sooooo pi**ed off Knowledge is the key I dont even know where the door is..

Why can we not attend a dafne in another health trust its all from the same pool after all..

Annoyed to no end and work in the morning Its going to be a good day..lol

It is a shame that DAFNE isn't funded as it should be it's a worth while investment.

I did my DAFNE back in 2008, but it's touch and go every year whether the course will be funded, in 2008 my hospital ran 5 courses throughout the year, none of these courses were actually funded by the PCT, the money was found out of the hospital coffers and the diabetic team used personal holiday allowance or unpaid leave to enable 5 courses to be run..

I would check out the link that ND gave very good source of information, there are two books available Using insulin by John Walsh and another called Think like a pancreas, either of these books are a very good resoure and back information.. either one is well worth buying
 
Sorry to hear you could not get on your course. Surely there has to be a way to get on one?! My doctor suggested i go on one of these courses although its not a DAFNE one. Its 1 day a week for 5 weeks and sounds very similar. Anyone been on any DAFNE equivalents?
 
hi sorry you didnt get on the course,after reading lots on here and finally feeling a bit settled i was going to ask to go on one... altho not sure as a parent of t1 i would be allowed, will have a look at link and hope it help you x
 
i never went on dafne either as there was a 10mnths waiting list in my area :?

I did DAFNE back in October, very worthwhile and informative. There is a day set aside for partners/guardians to come in and learn about hypo's, hypers and ketoacidosis, also to learn about sick day rules whilst caring for someone with diabetes.

I may be wrong, but I think the course for children isn't called DAFNE, but what ever its called I am sure that they will make provisions for parents to come along with their child and learn the principles of the course. Look into it...............you'll be pleased you did!

it's called 'Insight' where I live, 3 half days and 1 full day across 4 weeks with follow up half days at 3 mths and 6 mths afterwards. I had to do it in order to get a pump but having said that, I only asked for my pump after I'd done it?! wasn't really bothered about a pump before hand! 8) it amazes me how different diabetes care can be depending on where you live.....I know that we all had to write letters to the hospital after my course as there are plans to stop them at some stage because of funding issues?! I would have paid my own money to go on one and am horrified I had to wait for 24 years to go on one in the first place!
 
i'm currently waiting for my HBA1C results to see if i am eligible for DAFNE,

but ive also been researching pumps and i read that you are entitled to be treated anywhere in the country,

maybe look for a diabetes specialist outside of your area that could get you on their dafne course instead,

good luck and i hope you get on there (aswell as me too :))

Been pestering my sdn about this she is putting it forward to the consaltant so fingers crossed.
How do you get a pump,? Is there a special reason for getting a pump ..
My next venture .
Also I am thinking about organising a charity fund raiser for the DAFNE course anyone got any info on the legality of this any help would be very welcome very.. Also who to contact, any DAFNE trained doctors, nurses, who might have come accross this post who can help please get in touch.
Compulsary DAFNE training for all diabetics ?

If it was so simple as to raise money I be there with you..

DAFNE isn't something that can be rolled out over-night..

Each DAFNE course is run by a consultant/highly specailist doctor, Diaebtic nurse and diabetic dietitains which all have to recieve training by DAFNE to enable them to correctly give the DAFNE course.. And the training for the professionals takes weeks not days in London at DAFNE head quaters...

Each course has a min of 5 and a max of 8 diabetics, it is run over 5 consecitive days. Group sizes above or below these numbers you lose the effectiness of the training, as you loose the interaction between diabetics and the training team etc...

DAFNE actually comes from Germany we follow the same principles in Germany and other eruopean countries the diabetic stays in hospital as in patients for a week, here in the uk it's was decided that this would be far too expensive so changed to a day venue instead.. Even then it's costs around £500 mark for each diabetic..

I have got some links somewhere about DAFNE, costs etc, and will put them up when I find them..
 
perhaps you could enquire about a similar style of course? the Insight course I attended was run by 2 highly qualified DN's who have (between them!) an extensive knowledge of all things Diabetic and nutritious! Obviously, they had been on training courses on how to train us diabetic types but no Docs were involved and no specific dieticians. As I haven't been on the actual DAFNE course per se I can't compare them but the Insight course has changed my life so I don't think I was short changed! :D If you PM me I can give you the details of the nurses who ran my course, they may be able to help you contact the right people, although it is my belief that Insight is run only in my area.........
 
I just rang the local Diabetes Nurse because I couldn't attend the DAFNE course in March due ot work commitments and she said, they are running one in July and possibly in May - but only if they can get enough participants...
