An absolutely horrific story!!
The article is confusing however, the DM says that:
"However, on 4 November 2010 Margaret began to feel unwell and she recognised the tell-tale signs that her blood glucose levels had risen to a point where she needed medical help. She was admitted to the Alexandra Hospital and after being treated in intensive care she was moved to a ward for ongoing glucose tests and treatment."
So, she was admitted due to high BG levels and nine days later:
"In the early hours of 13 November, Margaret was found collapsed and unconscious and she was rushed back to intensive care where doctors discovered that she had suffered severe brain damage as a result of dangerously low blood glucose levels."
What makes me worry is that you can be admitted for high BG levels and spend the next nine days in hospital. Upon diagnosis, with very high BG levels most people won't spend a single night in hospital. I think it really makes me extremely aware that if I ever have to spend time in hospital I want to be able to test myself or have my Wife or family do it when they visit. At the very least I will be asking my Wife to make sure if I ever end up in hospital she phones regularly and makes sure I am being tested.
