After several years on Metformin and Pioglitazone my bloods were getting too high so I was additionally prescribed Dapagliflozin. So far it is working well, but the leaflet included with the Dapagliflozin says that it should not be taken with Pioglitazone. I have read about several studies that tested the combined actions of Dapagliflozin and Pioglitazone, without any warnings about the combination. The nurse practitioner noticed the warning when first prescribing, but she said that she had several patients on both, this comment was repeated by the pharmacist when questioned, so I am confused. Is it safe to take both Dapagliflozin and Pioglitazone? What are the risks? Why does the manufacture of Dapagliflozin expressly prohibit this combination?
