Dating & Diabetes - how to get the two 'D's' to work togethe

Hey there... So this may seem a trivial question, but how do you navigate diabetes if you're a single gal (or guy!) who's actively going on dates...?

I've been asked on a few dates lately, but completely stumped as to what to do or say when it comes to the recent diagnosis... Should I mention it (potentially off putting) or wait a while (potentially seems like I'm being deceptive!?)

And as for dinner - have noooo clue how to navigate that at the mo!!

Any tips?

I don't think it would be a big deal Sunshine. I would possibly bring it up when you go to eat and make it a bit of a joke. Before I was diagnosed, it certainly wouldn't have bothered me and I wouldn't have know much about it anyway ! Good luck with the dating, with a name like Sunshine Kisses, you can't fail ;-)

I agree with mo. If you go out for dinner just be open about it! I find most people are curious and want to look at my pen etc. It's a part of you and it's not a big deal, enjoy dating :)

I agree, just be open about it. The chances are they will probably already know or know of someone with diabetes, & it's also a good conversation starter! I take it these are dates with people you don't already know?

From experience, with me & my hubby, we started off as friends when working together, I never hid it but didn't have to blurt it out either. Turned out his dad had diabetes too!

Good luck! Will you let us know how it goes?

Or..

I'm sorry but the sugar condition in my body causes me commit random acts of outrageous behaviour near someone as beautiful as you.

Then lean over the table and plant a kiss, safe in the knowledge you've covered yourself.

Thanks Hale & Lynde... Yep, they're dates with people I don't know (wonders of online dating!)

I'll try just 'casually' dropping it in... Though I guess cos I'm still anxious/unsure about it all I'm worried that it will make them so... But I guess to the right person it won't be an issue... I've just cancelled a couple of dates over the weekend as wasn't sure what to do - hence the post as thought 'this is silly - you're already feeling a bit **** about your health, no need to add your relationship status into the mix too'
(I had a bit of a 'fragile' day yesterday following an afternoon at a friends garden tea party/baby shower - not only was the place *laden* with homemade cakes and scones and crisps and chocolates that I couldn't eat, but I was also the *only* single person amongst about 30 girls... not a great confidence booster!!)

But will be sure to update as and when new opportunities come along... ;-)

Embrace being single. Dating is meant to be fun so don't let yourself get stressed. Enjoy your dates. Some will be so bad they make you cringe, some will turn out as mates and some will be more! Diabetes doesn't define you and no decent person will let it affect a simple first date

Sunshine, don't know you but you appear to be very kind and funny ! These are great qualities. When ( and if ) you meet up on a date, try to look at it as making a friend rather than anything more. That way, there's no pressure or any "awkward" moments from the start. You may be lucky and meet someone great on the first date or it may take you many more ! Whatever happens, enjoy the journey and I'm sure your guy is out there somewhere ! Chin up girl ;-)
