Hi, very new to this my 3 year old dd was diagnosed type 1 3 weeks ago just 2 weeks after i had given birth to my little boy, everything has come at once.

Just wanted to ask

How did you cope with finding out?
How long did it take to get your head around it ?

Thanks

A big welcome to the forum. Congratultions on the birth of your baby! A new baby and diabetes joining your family all in one go ... try as best you can to look after yourself.

In answer to your questions I would have to say that it was very hard to cope with at the start and it isn't until you get some confidence with insulin and knowing what happens to your child in different circumstances that things get easier. Getting some sleep is hard but it is either a bonus or a curse that you will be up with your baby in the night anyway.

I would have to say the first year gets you up to speed with most situations. In that time you will have seen growth, some illnesses, active days, changes in seasons and tried out a heap of different food types.

Don't aim to be perfect. You will see fluctuations in blood sugar and sometimes you wont even know why. I can also admit to putting Khaleb to bed with a bsl of 24mmol in the first few months of diagnosis as I was so exhausted I just had to get some sleep.

My son is on Levemir (twice daily) and Novorapid (breakfast, lunch and dinner). Lots of parents here and we'll be happy to help out by answering with our own experiences.

hiya and welcome

wow u have alot on ur plate a new baby and diabetes to cope with, those first few weeks are so hard i didnt think id ever get there but u do like jen said i think the first year gives u ur steepest learning curve and u manage to get ur head around it all. if u can learn to carb count that gives u a greater understanding of diabetes i found but we didnt learn about any of that for a few years altho its more popular now than it was then.

if ur ever stuck or worried about something there is usually someone around who can help or has been through what ur going through i wish i had found this resource so early on it would of helped me alot then, having said that its helped me alot now too

good luck and ask anything u would like we r a friendly bunch :D :D

Gosh! What a lot for you to cope with right now!

Welcome to the forum. As others have said there are loads of experienced parents who are always here to offer advice and guidance. You are on a steep learning curve but with knowledge comes power.

This site has been a godsend for me. I got to know some lovely people who devote so much time in trying to help others. I hope that you too find this site not just a place to draw information from, but a place that you can go when things get hard and you want support from others who have been and are going through what you are.

Things do get easier and overtime diabetes becomes away of life. Just take one small step at a time, ask as many questions as you wish and try and put your feet up - if you get a chance!!

Hi Again, Thank You for the congratulations, it has been very tough having both the baby and finding out my dd is diabetic, sleep has been minimal.

I have been looking for a site like this with people who have children around her age too find out there experiences how they dealt with it and so on because i think every little helps when you know nothing about it.

Hope everyone is well and thank you for the support

yes we did with dylan when he was on injections he used to have really bad hypos in the night which resulted in him fitting but that is why we were given the pump and since his control is so much better we dont have the same problem. diabetes is scary but when u get on top of it all u just take it in ur stride
