Today we lost another great musician - Dave Brubeck. He led many magnificent jazz groups, but for me the best of all was the quartet that consisted of Brubeck on piano, Paul Desmond on alto sax, Eugene Wright on bass and the incomparable Joe Morello on drums. Their greatest hit was Take Five, composed by Desmond, included on an album called Time Out, in which they experimented with different time signatures. Most jazz is performed in 4/4 time or 2/4 time. Brubeck and the quartet produced work in 3/4 (waltz time), 5/4 and even 9/4. I feel that their best album was a recording of a concert given in New York at Carnegie Hall. The climax was a mesmerising drum solo by Joe Morello which he played mostly in 5/4 time but then switched to 4/4.
Where is another musician with the talents of Brubeck? Will we ever see his like again?
