Dawn Phenomena

Had the first hbac1 test since diagnosis - that test was in June. whilst pleased with result ( good control ) the result was still higher than suggested by within day tests - on waking / per dinner / before bed.

Over the hot weather struggled with the 'on waking' test - in sixes most of the time, rather then below 6.

We got up a 2.30 the other day for an early flight on holiday. Shocked to see. 9.4 in the 'on waking' test.

On this basis then, assuming this is a normal state of affairs, for a number of hours a day blood glucose could be higher than suggested by the waking hours tests. Assume this is the 'dawn phenomena'. Is there anything that can be done to bring this under control, eg rather than SR metformin, should I suggest a targeted metformin before going to bed ? Is ther anything none- drug related that can be done ? I will set the alarm and do a few more tests first, but curious to know any views or knowledge out there.

All the best.

I was having high morning readings and my diabetes nurse gave me an additional 500mg metformin to take before bed. I'm now getting morning readings of high 4's and 5's.

Still not got great control for evening readings but morning readings seem to be sorted. :)

If the sugar level goes down at about 2 am in morning and then goes up at around 7 -8 am, this is different than dawn phenomena is known as “Sumogyi effect”. To lower morning readings
1. Finish dinner early say by 6 pm.
2. Eat very less carb in dinner.
3 Take metformin or Any liptin salt medicine as per advice of your doctor.

This should see you through Sumogyi effect.
I have experienced this.

What are your blood sugars doing the rest of the day? Around meals? Because if you change your diet, the fasting readings in the morning should eventually come down to follow suit. https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html might help. As for metformin, there is no "targeted" met. It's just a matter of whether or not it'll hit your bowels with side effects yes or no, mainly... Slow release is gentler on the gastro-intestinal system. A different met wouldn't change it, but you could up the dosage if diet isn't for you.
