Getting fed up with this Diabetes mularchy !
I am on day 3 of Metformin , and my reading is 9.3 on the monitor after eating salad and a mini Higgidy quiche four hours ago !
Does it take a while to kick in ,
I am on 500mg to start with , increasing to 2 X 500mg after 2 weeks .
Any help / info would be great !!

HBA1C was at 66 thats why they put me on this

The quiche won't be doing you any favours with the carbs in the pastry. Metformin doesn't really have a massive impact on BS levels- it helps with insulin resistance I believe and was a slimming drug originally I think so reduces appetite, with these effects taking several weeks to build up. BS control is going to com from weight loss, exercise and carb reduction.

"Patience young padawan!" - isn't that supposed to be YOUR line? Hehe

Metformin takes a while to start affecting your numbers give it a couple of weeks - but have a moocj round the forum for advise/ideas on diet and exercise to help. Some follow a low carb diet, some go for the low GI/GL approach. Find what works for you and test, test ,test to start. Whilst your getting meds/eating right test before you eat then again 2 hrs after anything over a 2 point jump (eg from 7 to 9) isn't good and you need either to avoid that food or reduce the portion size and try again. Good Luck on your DB journey

As the others said. Metformin isn't a miracle cure. It helps with various things going on in your body and is a good, safe drug, but will only reduce your levels to a limited extent. Only you can do that by changing your diet, exercising more, and losing weight (if you need to). It's down to you I'm afraid, but you are in the right place for help and support. Have a browse round and come back with any questions you have. If you give us a typical day's menu we may be able to show you where you are going wrong. Good luck!

Hi there,
the minimum EFFECTIVE dose of Met ( when it starts to make a significant difference) is 1500.
500 and 1000 are just loading doses on your way through to that.

Hi Yoda,

I was recently diagnosed and put straight on Metformin 500mg a day. My BG test in the doctor's surgery was 15.5 and was as high as 23 the day before!

I have been on the tablets for just over 2 weeks, and also eating the LCHF way (almost) for a little less time than that.

The graph below shows a steady decrease in BG levels although they are still not in the "safe" range. I have also lost 9 pounds in that time period. :)

So from my experience a combination of the Metformin, diet and increased exercise seems to be taking me in the right direction.

Thanks Carol ,
The more I hear about peoples experience with Metformin makes me happier ! I was expecting a magic pill !!
LOL
Thank you , good luck to you !! ..... and onwards and upwards !! ;)

Metformin without carb control, probably won't get BG into the safe zone, even if you use the maximum dose.I've been on 2 x 500mg Metformin for many years and other than the odd "blip", if I'm not well, I keep in my own target zone of "under 7 usually under 6".
I do this by carb control. For me that means eating very little carb of any kind[except cellulose!].I don't weigh or measure, just leave out.
For example, yesterday my husband and I met up for lunch at our local "Bella Italia" I had Mozzarella and tomato salad for a starter and for a main I had an American burger, with no chips or bun and extra salad. Luckily I love salad and eat it by the ton. I allow myself a single slice of Burgen Soya and Linseed bread per day. It makes great toast. My BGs have been on target. I fund my own strips.
It's not difficult t find tasty healthy food if you want to. I plan menus each week and buy fresh natural food.NO PACKETS!
At the moment I'm planning to make some sugar free ice cream with raspberries.Recipes for such foods are easy to find on the web.
You have to use a meter to find out what is the best carb level for you. It's individual.

Hi there,

I, too, have just started Metformin (day 7) ...I have no idea what my BS levels are at the moment because I decided to just get my diet straight and not be a slave to numbers. I'm not saiyng you shouldn't check...just don't let it become something that brings your mood down when you're trying hard :) Like everyone is saying, with exercise and less carbs, your body is bound to be getting fitter, so it's all good x x My lifestyle has changed since day 1 and won't go back to how it was before...in fact several of my friends said to me yesterday I was looking good...lots of water, low carbs and no sugar in coffee or alcohol for me :)

Bon chance x x x

You take the 500 as a starter for the first week then take 2 then 3 for a proper dose of met . See dr for 1500 met. It can go to 2500 or 2000 for slow release
Google it for verification
