Dazed and confused by new EU laws

Hello everyone, this is my first post here I think so here is my rant.

I went to my usual nurse for diabetic clinci at my GP's, all my results were in great shape, my cholesterol was low
my heart in great shape even though I have a certain type of angina (i dont know which i forgot) so basically Im ok

the problem I had was with my over all glucose score which I was told was 9.6 and thats bad..but the year before I scored 8.1 and the year before 7.2 Now, I complained and said well thats not too bad seeing Ive had quite a bit go wrong and have caught two viruses that totally wiped me out for over 8 weeks. I was then told (and this just blew me away) the over all score isnt 7 anymore its 5 and that the idea now was to bring us in line with Europe?????? I mean wth is going on? So, up until they moved the over all score to 5 I was doing okay on 7 or 8, its not that much over 7 is it? But now they (the powers that be) have lowerd it to 5 it makes me look like im out of control and my nurse is going mental on me...has anyone else heard this or is it just the surgery I go to?

I'm afraid yyou confused me.
I'm really not sure what "scores" you mean.
Do you mean HbA1c? If so, a steady increasse over 3 years is cause for concern.
Since your Nurse has your results, It might be n idea to make an appointment to discuss this and decide on a care plan. You SHOULD already have a care plan, however, loads pf people, including me, haven't got such a thing.

You either misheard or your nurse is an idiot. A "score" of 5 for HbA1c, assuming you are referring to that, wouldn't be set by EU or anyone else. It would be totally un-achievable by most diabetics and a fair view non-diabetics. The target is still 7. Having said that, your results were a bit too high really, so you do need to look at your diet, your exercise or your meds to bring it down.

Yes afraid that is quite bad if that's your HBA1C score. It means that over the last 3 to 4 months your sugar levels have been quite a lot higher than the top NHS guideline figure of 7.5. The NHS likes you to score between 6.5 and 7.5 and does so because with a higher score you run a lot higher risk of developing problems with your eyes or nerve problems with your feet, risks of amputations, heart attacks and strokes are also a lot higher. As a general guide every 1 over 7 DOUBLES the risk of developing those complications I've listed so at 9.6 you are nearly EIGHT times more likely of getting one of them than someone with a score of 7. Please take those risks seriously as many diabetics under estimate them much to their cost later on. A lot of people on this forum actually think even the 6.5 value is too high and aim and achieve values less than 6.5.

I see you are Type 1 on insulin so maybe post a question in the Type 1 area of the forum about diet suggestions and how to get better control.

Ive stopped all the meds the brain injury department put me on and my sugar levels are lower im going to close my account here seems I just confuse everyone
and thats normal with me, I fell off a 2 story building 8 years ago and I dont get out or over what I need to..the point I was trying to make is that before whoever it was that decided that sugar levels in the blood is now going to be 5 not 7 overall so anyone that was going along ok on 6 or 7 wont be from now on because im told it has to be 5

Is it possible that you are referring to this"new" WHO recommendation? Possibly with the change in HbA1c units thrown in for good measure (iirc 6.5% DCCT =~ 5% IFCC = 48 mmol/l IFCC)?

the point I was trying to make is that before whoever it was that decided that sugar levels in the blood is now going to be 5 not 7 overall so anyone that was going along ok on 6 or 7 wont be from now on because im told it has to be 5
Assuming, for the moment, that there was such a change: It's not that simple. Research continues, as does development of new drugs. It's not inconceivable that HbA1c targets will have to revised as a result.

hi i don.t know of the new rules but if your off your meds now i think your sugars will fall. i presume you may have been on steroids? don.t sign off this site its full of info and tips. keep well x

Hi All.
As a result of visting my DSN yesterday I have been discharged back to my GP's care, as they're very happy with my HbA1c getting down to 7.1% or 54 mmmol see my signature for past HbA1c's...
Am happy myself with this news as I HAVE worked "hard" to get to where I am now! [made sure they know this fact too!!!]
Plus my GP's team are soooo helpful and supportive with me , actually far better than the specialist clinic I had to attend !!!! Treating me as a statistic facts,figures,data... blah blah blah! Not as a person ! if you see what I mean?
My DSN told me they are handling 20,000 diabetic patients and when they get 1 sorted and discharged [me - yesterday!] they get another one in needing specialist care. The demands on the specialist teams are intense and excessive.
Back to the topic here! I was discharged as they're happy with me at 7.1% 54 mmol ...
How the heck can we reach 5% without contorting ourselves??? Its hard going as it is !!!!
Why cant the powers that be - leave things alone????? This news has shocked me!!!
I will always peak n trough with my blood sugar levels always have done, still am doing so even now, was told by the head DSN yesterday that I ALWAYS will do too... [have to learn to ACCEPT this ] her words ... NOT mine!!!
Insulin therapy suits me now , finally can tollerate it, use it happily painfree and problem free despite it 'has' taken over 2 years to find the right therapy.
Anna.

I dont think that anyone using insulin will be expected to get an hba1c of 5%. I most certainly wouldn't want to try to achieve it because I know it would result in me having loads of hypos and as a result would make me fairly unhappy. My consultant would really frown on this anyway and would want everyone to have cgm to keep them safe. Maybe though there is a silver lining ............
