Hi everyone,

I was just wondering how everyone copes with diabetes symptoms? Mostly the excess thirst and frequent urination, I know this is due to high blood sugar so is it simply a case of grin and bear it until my sugar levels are lowered or can I do something about it? It's beginning to really frustrate me as my friends are constantly taking the mickey out of me for needing the loo all the time.

Thank you!

@clingclang - Hi. Drink plenty of water. The more water you drink the better, it helps to flush out your system and stabilize the glucose in your bloodstream. (I look at it like this: the water is diluting the sugar in my blood).:)

What medication are you on? How high are your bg levels?

Defo drink plenty of water

Edited to say - just seen your other post, are you still waiting to see a specialist? I would be chasing up the appointment of your thirst is that excessive and due to the weight loss you've had/are having, if your bgs are that high you may also have ketones which untreated can be serious

Hi @clingclang your symptoms of untried for weight loss, excessive thirst and excessive urination suggest that you have deficient insulin. Do you have a way of testin your blood sugar or for ketones? How long until you see the consultant? Can you try ringing the diabetic specialist nurse team at the hospital for advice?

I've been drinking over 3 litres a day generally, mostly water but occasionally Diet Coke. I am still waiting to see the specialist, the appointment is in 8 weeks. I spoke to my doctor and had another blood test which showed my hba1c has remained the same since February so they said they can't bring the appointment forward. Which is obviously very frustrating. No medication or advice given by the doctor other than wait for the specialist.

I have been testing my blood sugars regularly and in the mornings they are fine, usually between 5.7-6.4 so I'm happy with my fasting levels but throughout the day my blood sugar rarely goes below 8 and is usually between 10-12. So they're not overly high but my body clearly doesn't like it being that high and I'm struggling with it now purely because my friends constantly comment on it, and lecturers are noticing I have to leave multiple times throughout a lecture/seminar. It's difficult because I need the toilet nearly every half an hour and none of my friends seem to understand.

@clingclang - It's a good idea to keep a Food & Blood Sugar Diary, over time you will see which foods give you spikes in blood sugars. Keep a record of your blood sugar before meals and test 2 hours after eating and record the contents of that meal.
Be careful what you eat, snacking and eating sugary foods/carbohydrates can affect blood sugars. Foods that cause "spikes" are called White Carbohydrates: Rice, Pasta, Bread, Potatoes, Cakes, Pastries, Biscuits.
Eat Proteins, Fats, Veg and non-tropical Fruit in your diet. Exercise also helps to lower blood sugars. A lot of forum members follow LCHF Diet have a look/read at the following: http://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/60-seconds

I have started to try a low carb diet but struggling at uni at the moment which is hindering it, but I've certainly reduced my carbs a lot and do aim to reduce further. Thank you.

Well done Clingclang. If you eat enough protein, meh inch is around 1-1.5g per kilo of your body weight and lots of good fat daily, ( butter, cream,Virgin olive oil, nuts, hemp etc) you are most likely to feel full and satisfied and knocking back the carbs will then be so much easier.
