I have ignored my condition since diagnosis some 18-24 months ago. And thinking back, I've probably had Type 2 for some years prior to diagnosis.

What has scared me recently is I've noticed I've been getting very very tired at night even after a good nights sleep. I did think it was just due to a glass too many of wine...but it's not that, I feel tired even now. And I've always gone to the loo at least 2/3 times during the night.

I've known my blood sugar is high and usually between 12 and 15.

The extreme tiredness has scared me, so from yesterday I've cut carbs to an absolute minimum and gone to 6 small meals a day.

This mornings fasting blood sugar was 12.1 !

So my question is, how long should it take before levels return to normal with my taking my diet seriously. I was taking 2 500mg metformin, and a GP advised I up this to 3 a day with meals (which I've been doing the last 12 months with the occasional missed pill)....I'm not sure if it's helping as can't judge based on my poor diet...where I would normally have massive bowls of pasta for dinner and toast for supper.......

Taking the condition seriously now, that's for sure.

You can't change the past. Take another look at Daisy's welcome post and get some tips on what you can eat. Your levels should come down if you cut the carbs. Your metformin could be increased by another 500 mg up to the maximum dose, but it doesn't have a huge effect - a reduction of 1 - 2 mmol.

I've just taken another blood sugar test. Fasting level this morning was 12.1, I've have a 60g bowl of Lizzies Granola with full fat milk, 1 x 500g Metformin, and at work a Grande Americano with millk....and now my blood sugar is 14.6 !

Do I need to make an appointment with a doctor ?

Hi

I was (am?) in denial about my health too.

Do you have any excess weight to lose.
Can you increase exercise?

If you are interested in lower carbohydrate choices I can thoroughly recommend the book
'Carbs And Cals' by Chris Cheyette and Yello Balolia. It has photographs of portion sizes, which I thought sounded a bit like a novelty but is actually eye-opening. It then also gives, calories, carbohydrate, protein, fat, saturated fat and fibre in grams per portion.

Really helpful to me.

Cara

Thanks Cara,

I will order the book on Amazon now.

I was 18.5 stone, but the metformin alone with no diet change, has allowed me to drop to 15 stone 10lbs, which I've been for some months now.

I think I could easily drop another stone to a stone and a half....

Time I took the condition seriously and stop kidding myself that I'll be ok.....

Hi James. Just had a quick look at Lizzi's website for interest. It does look like the Granola may have too many carbs? It also claims to have fructose which is deposited as fat around the body. All of these things are OK in small quantity but 60gm is higher than I would have for breakfast. My wife makes our own muesli from oats, various seeds, nuts and no-sugar added dried fruit

Yes, I'd had a recommendation to try the Lizzies as even on the packet it does state clearly, designed for slow release. The proportions of the ingredients looked ok.

I guess it boils down to different foods react differently for people depending on how severe your diabetes is, mine seems to spike with great ease, that said, perhaps these very short term findings aren't being helped by the fact my diet has been so poor for a long time...so I'm not sure how long it will take to get the blood sugar down to sensible levels....I've just had a small salad with 3 chicken legs, apple and diet pepsi + 1 x 500 mg metformin...so I'll take another blood test at 3:30....but I'd guess it will be north of 12 based on today's readings.

Just checked out E Bay for that book Cara and there seem to be 3 different books. And hugely varying prices !!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_trksi ... &_from=R40

Which one is it... The full book or the pocket version?

And there is one there which is Carbs,Cals and fat too.

Which one have you got then?

Thanks for that James and thanks Cara for the recommendation.
