Hi all,
Hope everyone is well.

I’m due to have the first process of a root canal procedure done tomorrow.

Was wondering if anyone having had personal experience of having this done noticed any change in their blood glucose levels afterwards or after invasive dental treatment of any kind.

Thanks

P.S I’m aware that a stressor ( physical or otherwise) can have a potential impact

I had a root canal done many years ago before being diagnosed with T1D. My thinking is if the procedure goes well you shouldn’t have any BS impact. I had a very good dentist and the procedure went well with no pain no problem. I think sometimes it doesn’t go well and you get inflammation and have to retreat etc. Good luck :)

Hi,
A couple of weeks ago I had to visit the dentist only for a couple of fillings.
My dentist kmows I have T1, and may need to treat hypo if needed.
Anyway, sat in waiting room my blood sugar went low, so I treated the hypo and then went in for the fillings. It wasn't long till my xDrip alarm was going off telling me my BS was going high. Im certain that fight or flight was at play. My BS was at 12 mmol/L at the end of the treatment.
Good luck with your treatment.

I had root canal treatment a number of years ago. Blood sugar wasn't really affected too much while I was at my own dentist, but then I had to go to a specialist as my root was very narrow. Had to travel an hour to get there, and didn't know the dentist, so was very stressed and my blood sugar shot up on the first visit. Treatment was successful and by the last couple of visits my bloods remained stable throughout, and afterwards. The specialist kept checking with me that I wasn't going hypo, as I had my eyes shut.
Hope it all goes well for you.

Thanks so much for the info @chrisbug. I like to try and anticipate any potential pitfalls to these kind of things.
Hi Stephyr7738, I spoke to my nurse about such things, and she pointed out that you can't always guarantee how you will react to different stress/pain etc.
So, my next dental appointment I will aim to have my BS within range, have an easily consumable hypo treatment to hand, and be prepared for a raised blood sugar afterwards. (for me I can get dropped off to the dentist and walk the 1.5 mile trip back home, that will help to lower my BS together with a correction dose).

It's like driving, some days on different trips my BS will raise, other days it may not. Its a case of treating the high BS when it's safe to do so.
The nurse told me as long as it's for a short period of time and doesn't pass
14 mmol /L, it is safer in these situations.
And even though I feel rubbish with elevated BS, I know that this is the best course of action.

I had root canal done early last year. I didn't know was having it done until was in the chair. So didn't have time to stress, afterwards my bs level was normal
