I'm ashamed to say I am petrified of going to the dentist. I've not been for more than 15 years. I have to go now as one of my front teeth has fallen out and need to get some treatment. Is there any other people on here who has been in a similar situation? How did they overcome the fear?

There is a dental phobia website that recommends phobia friendly dentist. I’m lucky to have found one of the list and she is actually amazing. In all honesty the whole practice is wonderful.

Hi @steveo4 ,

Not all dentists are the same.

My sister & I had a dentist as kids. This oral "pro" was a tyrant. (My sis had a split lip after one session.) We both vowed to never to go back...she told me I needed two fillings in the new year when I was a teen, many years back. Went to a different dentist after getting up the courage & guess what? No fillings.. Hmmm. I wonder about the one she gave me a good couple of years prior...

However, my sis & I did happily move on. I found a great guy. Spoke like a West Country farmer. Just what I needed in my neck of the woods. Now he's retired. I gave the new younger replacement guy a shot.... Portuguese "metal head" (the music genre, not fillings.)

These days. Dentists are like mechanics for yer car.. Or a GP.? Cherish the "right one" when you find them.
There can be the odd "frog" that needs to be "kissed..."

Don't let your oral health pass you by because of an experience in the past that may have tainted a past experience..

Best wishes, & best of luck!

I certainly recommend telling the dentist about your fears and why you feel that way ,most dentists are human !! They like to help if they can

Thank you all for your comments I have found a dentist that looks good and I'm going for a consultation with her tomorrow. They specialize in nervous patients so hopefully it will be ok.
