Hi, I'm a type 1 diabetic as well. I've also been feleing really depressed I am 20 years old now and I was diagnosed when I was 6. I've been fine for a while, until recently, when i started to see a doctor properly and my eyesight worsened so much. it makes me so sad that my eyes sight is negative 7 and i cant find any one to talk to about my depression. is it normal to just tell your doctor your depressed i feel like it would be weird. im genuinely unhappy i find myself crying all the time and i cant describe it to anyone. my bloodsugar changes so much i'm seeing a nutritionist now and ive been using the dexcom thing but nothing seems to work. this morning i woke up and my blood sugar was 22 isnt that horrible? i'm starting think that my depression has something to do with the fluctuation of my blod sugar but i'm not sure, and i think it would be weird to just tell my doctor about it. i'm also unaware of my hypos which is terrible. i just really don't know what i should do. i feel stupid for realising all this now when i'm 20 and i've been diagnosed for 14 years. the thing is i measure my sugar five times a day and im good at counting carbs i just need to know what's happening? and why im feeling so depressed all the time im actually miserable.

I really think you need to tell your Gp abou this. He won't think it weird at all as diabetics are more likely to be depressed han others.
In fact hey are supposed to ask you if you are depressed at your annual reviews. I am not surprised you are feeling depressed as you don't know what is happening to you or whty. Your doctor needs to know about all of this asasp . I hope you can get some help soon. Le ius know how you get on.

It took me about a year to pluck up the courage to see my GP re. 'feelings of depression'. When I finally did, I learned that its one of the most common things doctors have to deal with on a day-to-day basis - so don't feel at all uncomfortable about it!! Just walk in there and explain exactly how you feel. Your doctor will take it from there and ask you relevant questions, etc, etc.

Don't suffer pointlessly. If its clinical depression, its unlikely to just go away. It can really make a mess of your life unless you deal with it. Just make the appointment.

Help is out there.

Hey don't feel embarrassed about going to your GP, they are very good at dealing with and getting help for people who suffer form depression, and it happens to the best of us from time to time, so go and get some help.
The low feelings will effect your control as depression does physiologically effect you ,not just mentally but also physically . So your control will be effected, and this alone will exacerbate your feelings of being down on a physical and emotional level...it's a vicious circle, swings in blood sugars cause swings in moods, along with feeling low it is a vicious circle.

Your Diabetic team will be good to get in touch with for depression, they really do understand how this does effect Diabetic control. I suffered very bad PND and they were the ones who picked up on it and watched me very closely while pregnant even to make sure I got help as I had had an episode of clinical depression in my early 20's.

Don't suffer in silence a short course of medication might be all you need to see a light at the end of the tunnel, or maybe just to speak to someone alone may help. Try your DSN they are usually very good with this sort of thing and will fully understand.

Let us know how you go on and all the very best

hi there, dont hesitate to talk to your gp they are there to help. i suffer with depression and i didnt tell anyone for a long time about how i was feeling this in turn delayed me getting any treatment for it and the longer you leave it the longer you will be suffering. please see your gp asap, i feel a lot better for seeking the help i needed. I wish you the best. x

I understand the embarrassment and in some way shame (there is still a stigma) in saying "i'm depressed" I was lucky I went to doctors with 1 complaint and he looked at me and said "is there anything else?" I think he knew! In my case it was brought on my legal battles after serious injuries in a motorbike accident. But think of what you're having to go through, and will get through-hardly surprising that you sometimes need a helping hand/ear. And don't forget to praise yourself for what you have come through already, it makes you stronger as you know many others couldn't do what you're doing.

I had the same thought recently, that high blood sugar somehow affects my emotional state. When i'm high in sugar (above 10) i feel miserable too, sometimes i don't feel like moving at all..i could spend all day looking at one spot. It's like your mind gets unattached from your body. But when sugar comes down i feel better and sudenly i fell like getting up and going somewhere or starting to clean my room, tidy up the drawers, wardrobe . I noticed when my sugar is going up from lets say 5.2 to 6 and when it reaches 6 i feel extremely happy. I want to sing, I want to dance. It goes away when my sugar goes down or more high up. When high blood sugar stays for longer i can get very deppresed, but if I manage to keep it under control for at least a day my depression starts getting better.

I went to a psychologist just recently after 6 years of sufering from depression. It helped. I felt ashamed first to say that i had it for so long and never told anyone, but for 5 years I didn't know it was depression. And after all, psychologist is there for you to understand you, not to judge you.
It's really worth seeking for help. You should try.

thank you all so much for the encouragement im going to tell my gp about this as soon as possible!
