hello all

it's been a while since i've been on the forum.

my history is that after putting up with various symptoms for ages i went to the dr's. he referred me to the diabetes clinic. my bs was from memory about 26, keytones off the scale. therefore they thought T1 and straight on novorapid and insulatard.

after a short time the bs levels consistently low so they took me off the novorapid and reduced the insulatard. they are now undecided about whether i'm T1 or T2 which was a surprise given my consultant is apparently (from what i've read about her) a leading diabetes expert on a global level.

i've now been diagnosed with moderate depression and prescribed citalopram. when i read the enclosed leaflet it said to take care with it if you take insulin as it can affect your bs levels. rather unhelpfully it doesn't say whether levels may go up or down or even that it is an individual thing in that some peoples' level rise and others fall.

i wondered if anyone has experience of taking the two medications and if so did the citalopram have any effect on your bs levels?

i'd like to hear about personal experiences and whether bs levels went up or down. i appreciate that i will just have to test my blood more often and keep an eye on levels and so on but would be very interested in the experiences of others which incidentally is what i like most about the forum - advice from people who suffer from diabetes as opposed to people who have read some books on the condition.

thanks in advance

I can't tell you how it affects your levels as when I was on it was not officially diabetic at that time. The reason it says to be careful is it contains sugar inside the tablet as like most meds do as the active ingredient is so small.

Like you say your going to need to keep a eye on your levels. The antidepressant will take a few weeks before it begins to work. Hopefully they will begin to take effect on you soon and your bg levels stay similar to what they are now.

I'm in the same boat with what type keep getting told type 1 then get a letter saying type 2 with likelyhood of being type 2 and have had issues with DKA as well.

I'm type 2 on insulin (novorapid) and take 30mg of citalapram it doesn't have any effect on my bs levels.

thanks very much for the responses. it's comforting to hear people haven't been badly affected by the combination.

thanks again for taking the time and trouble to post replies
