Well, amongst my Christmas post yesterday I had a letter from DEREK!
Yay!
Been waiting for "him" to get in touch since September.
DEREK, as some of you will know, is Diabetic Education and Revision in East Kent and "he", prompted by a referral from my GP, has offered me a 4 hour education session about my diabetes. All I have to do is phone up and book a date for a group session.
I'm sure some on here will have experienced DEREK - and many of you have probably been to a similar group in your area. I am planning to go, because I think that if it's offered then I should take it up and give it a go.
I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has had a similar "education opportunity" and if you found it helpful!
Thanks friends.

Think that's why you aren't getting replies lol
From what I've read some people find parts of it very helpful. Apart from the diet advice. They still say eat plenty of carbs! Plently of carbs got me into this mess! Lol

i,ve never heard of DEREK course but have been on the desmond one, inwhich they said eat carbs and some sugar

I had been told to drink sweet fizzy drinks .. The wife had moments before informed the. DBN that we don't use any artificial sweeteners and NEVER will .. It's a wife thing ! .. Never did get refered to the dietitian!!!!!!!!

I'm gobsmacked. Thank God for this forum that's all I can say....no wonder newly diagnosed people are arriving here saying how confused they are...it makes you wonder how many people are out there wondering why their diabetes is worsening. Firstly the advice is don't test...then these courses telling people to eat lots of carbs...and now sugar and fizzy drinks!!!

The good thing is that the wife will not have any fizzy drinks in the house .. But that's another story !!

if you learn one thing and know one thing is wrong with what they also say..then I think it's a successful education for the day

I'm not a great lover of artificial sweetners. But I do like the no added sugar squashes sometimes
I remember thoes ..I only get pure lemon juce .. From lemons or the unsweetened lemon juce used for cooking .. Other than that it tea or coffee .. Luckie as the wife only drinks water and one small coffee a day.
Not saying I am under the thumb .. But .. I have tried the healthy eating that was advised by experts.. It's got me where I was 21st dickey heart and T2 ?. Now lost 5st and feel great .. Gradually stopping tablets for heart and none for diabetes ..

BeeGee, I hope your Derek works out well :)

That's unreal Ally. God. Advising you to actually eat some sugar??? I knew they promote carbs. But sugar??? Has anyone else been told this?

I was told in hospital by the staff to have 3 lots of carbs a day, basically some with every meal. So i bought pasta, bread, rice potatoes etc etc. I bought stuff off the shelves with plenty of carb content, took them home and ate them. Then when it came to testing BS levels I was wondering why I couldn't get them down. It was only when I found this site that I was put on the right track and told to leave carbs out of my diet as much as possible that my BS levels have come right down. Granted I prefered what I was eating before I turned to a low carb diet but slowly getting used to the new low carb alternative....................and losing weight.

I did DESMOND. Told to avoid a fried egg and cheese like the plague, but it was ok to eat all manner of carby ****. I think the problem is that for some folk attending, just getting them off twenty pizzas for a pound and onto fruit and veg is a big step without trying to get them onto low carb as well. To be fair to the dietician at mine, she did try and sit with one very obese young woman who'd already had a stroke and plan a menu that wasn't a bottle of fruit juice and a sugary cereal bar for lunch.

I think also that they get fixated on carbs being the likes of bread, pasta and spuds... I still eat a reasonable amount of carbs but it's mainly veg based or pulses.

Thanks for your replies guys.
I've noticed in the last few months that most people don't understand that controlling carbs is so important.
My friends are very good about not giving me sugary desserts, chocolates etc, but can't seem to understand that I have problems with white bread, crackers with cheese and so on.
I spent ages feeling guilty that I could eat fish and chips ( only had them 2 or 3 times ) without it being a naughty diabetic!
Great to hear from you.

There are quite a few of us who can have fish from the chippy without a spike. But I don't order chips with it. I may pinch a couple from my daughter. I would spike too high. We all seem to be different. They only way is to test before and 2 hours after

I was put on a waiting list for Desmond in Feb at my first meeting with our surgery nurse. Never heard a thing about it and after finding this wonderful place, I'm not sure it's a good. Idea. I think they would forcibly (try to) remove me.

I've never heard of Derek but have done XPert which was six weeks duration 15 hours altogether and although sceptical to begin with I did learn a lot from it. They did say as type 2 we needed 4 to 14 portions of carbs a day!!!!!!but anybody with a little intelligence could soon work out that carbs = glucose so therefore avoid! I don't think anybody should be put off these courses but to go with an open mind, figure out what might work for the individual and ditch what you don't want to know. Per individual there is information on this forum which will suit some and not others, the same with education courses, some of it will be useful and some not, one size does not necessarily fit all. I have learned a lot on tis site and am pleased for those benefitting from lchf, personally I am unable to do lchf due to an inherited genetic colesterol problem. To be fair I have found benefit here and through the course work and appreciate all I have learned
