Thanks, Alliebee. Stupid title!
And what's wrong with a title "Derek" look what it's done for Ricky Gervais think what it could do for Diabetes :-)

I was put on a waiting list for Desmond in Feb at my first meeting with our surgery nurse. Never heard a thing about it and after finding this wonderful place, I'm not sure it's a good. Idea. I think they would forcibly (try to) remove me.

I exchanged some harsh words with one "educator" when being told I didn't need to carb count for a bowl of lentil chilli (No rice) and that the insoluble fibre (a carbohydrate) made no difference.

Well, amongst my Christmas post yesterday I had a letter from DEREK!
. . . . . .
I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has had a similar "education opportunity" and if you found it helpful!

Thanks friends.

Hi BeeGee,
I don't have any personal experience of DEREK but my cousin has just attended something very similar in the Portsmouth area only 3 or 4 weeks ago. I did quiz her about it because I'd heard so many bad things about DESMOND. She said that although they didn't promote low carb they did encourage trying to avoid carbs as well as sugar. My cousin also said that when some of the other attendees spoke of their low carb regime, there was a great deal of interest and the people running the course didn't try to 'poo poo' what they were saying. There was also discussions about 'eating to your meter' and testing, testing, testing was discussed. Sounded quite open minded to what others have experienced with DESMOND. I think you should go for it and just take away what makes sense and fits in with what you're doing.

Lowering carbs, whatever you do about fats will lower your cholesterol. There is a lot of empirical evidence if you google for 10 or 15 minutes, you'll also find an article that says otherwise, but I only found one, so the weight of evidence suggests that lowering carbs lowers cholesterol.
The Harvard School of Public Health have done some interesting research in this area.
In my particular case I lowered my daily carbs from 250-300 gms down to less than 100 gms (usually about 80 gms) and my total cholesterol fell from 5.3 to 3.3. Since I stopped taking Atorvastatin and my legs have started working again my cholesterol has gone back to 5.3, I've effectively replaced a statin with lower carb. I also managed to get my BG to drop enough to throw out the Gliclazide and the Januvia. Oh, I also lost 3 stone.
