I'm probably being really stupid here but can someone tell me what a DESMOND course is?
I'm off to get my blood results from the new doctor this afternoon. Will let you know how we get on.

Hi Ian
DESMOND = Diabetes Education and Self Management for Ongoing and Newly Diagnosed
They are courses for Type 2s and I went on one this week.

Hi Sue,

First they said, don't test at all because the blood sugar fluctuates so much at all times of the day that it is not going to give you an accurate overall picture of what is really going on with the blood glucose. I told them that I test at all times of the day before and after meals because it reassures me that I'm not going too high and how else am I going to know exactly what's happening. They relented a bit at that point and said not to test too much and if I did then only to do it first thing in the morning and perhaps only once a week because this would give the best overall picture of what is happening to blood sugars! What a crock I thought - to put it politely!

Who educates these educators I wonder?

Kind regards
Karen

Perhaps they're told to say this so that Health Service money is saved on the "expensive" test strips. But maybe that's just me being cynical!

Personally if the DESMOND course I went on is indicative of all such courses then I think it would save far more money if they just scrapped the course - there were only 2 of us on it and 2 "educators" for the whole day - and gave people a book on diabetes to read instead or pointed them towards this website.
