DH and I enable each other in our bad food choices. Since my diagnosis, we've both started to sort ourselves out, but he's got a much higher BMI than me and a more sociable job. I finally persuaded him past his fear of needles and he's had a full range of blood tests done. If he comes out with no diabetes and lower cholesterol and liver fat than me I'm going to be sooooo cross!!!! He finds it so much harder to motivate himself than I do, so without that shock I'm not sure how well he'll continue the good work and then how well we can support each other. Is that really bad of me :-)

There is nothing wrong with a little partner envy. I'm sure you really want all his tests to come back showing he is in tip top condition. But it is a much easier journey for us with support and we all want it and need it. I'm sure you will still get it no matter what the results.

Well, everything is within normal ranges, apart from his cholesterol, which is about where mine is. LDL and Tri-G are too high, HDL is just about within acceptable limits. Aside from being slightly peeved that a big bloke with a sedentary lifestyle should be showing no pre-diabetes, I am now wondering whether LCHF works for both conditions? It would make life far easier if so.

Well so far in my family, I am the only diabetic detected so far. Yet, in the interest of science, ALL of us are using LCHF because it is so healthy for almost anyone. Whats the problem? Why would you need to consider anything else? My family actually prefers LCHF diet to the old ways, my wife is losing weight, and its a no brainer.

The others are allowed to stock their own carby dietbusters, but end up munching mine instead. It makes shopping so much easier. It is also cheaper. I haven't seen a crisp packet in the house for over six months. Gone are the ready meals, the pasties and pies, the sauce in a jar products. There is even a litre of ice cream in the freezer thats had only a couple od scoops taken out in the last month. I wouldn't believe how we have adapted if I wasn't paying for it.

Anyone? Sorry, have to disagree, so not absolutely everyone. Whilst low carb is a no brainer, my recent urine test have shown that although I am in ketosis and therefore burning fat, the fat I consume isn't supplying energy to my muscles but being stored as fat. If you know of a cure please let me know because I'm fed up with eating about 1200 calories a day and not losing weight.

Yep me too. I'm seeing a naturopath to see if she can help me. I'll let you know if I get any answers. So far she has flagged up low levels of stomach acid, thyroid problems (though all blood tests look fine), adrenal fatigue, lack of lymphatic drainage, possible problem with gluten and dairy and more besides. I stopped listening when she said 'dairy'.....I can't live without cheese, butter and cream! But I guess I may have to. :( Anyhow if my weight starts to drop I'll let you know. :)

I'm on about 1500 calories a day and losing about 1lb a week with 100g or so carbs a day. DH is losing too as we've both given up the sugars etc. I suppose what I'm after is reassurance that LCHF also reduces cholesterol because that's so much easier as Oldvatr says!

Well LCHF reduced my cholesterol, (trigs now 0.8) but it doesn't work like that for everyone. Some people find that the saturated fats are a problem for them, some thrive on them.

I'm afraid you won't get that reassurance. All you can do is try it and see. Try it for a couple of months then ask for cholesterol/lipid tests and take it from there.
My experience is positive. My cholesterol/lipids have gone down and have improved each test I've had since going LCHF and I am very LCHF

I was referring to my family. All if us in the family.....

However, I can see how it could be misinterpreted. the anyone is perhaps too ambitious as you point out.

Do you really mean 1200 calories, i.e. 1k2 cal or1,2 Kcal? If so, then that is tiny. however if it is 1,200 Kcal then this is around half the RDA for an adult male with moderate exercise, so you should be losing weight either way. It is nothing to do with LCHF, since any calorie controlled diet should lose weight at that calorie limit. You need to consult a nutritionist and/or your GP since something unusual may be behind it. After all there are only three basic types of foodstuff (omitting fibre) that could be affecting weight.

Similar problem has been reported with Atkins diet. How do you realise that your muscles are not using the energy? Are you particularly weakened by the diet? I presume you are exercising to try to use up the energy.

My husband started on a reduced carb (not quite so low as me but easily below 100gms a day) when his cholesterol/trigs came back flagged as high.

Neither of us eats a great deal of saturated fat simply because we are vegetarians. We don't avoid eggs/butter/cheese/cream but most of our fat comes from olive oil, avocado & nuts. As he doesn't have blood sugar issues he still has porridge for breakfast (said to be good for cholesterol) & I also give him a flax/psyllium muffin most days. He also increased his exercise levels & all of this combined dropped his LDL cholesterol/trigs into the normal range within 3 months as well as increasing his HDL.

I was persuaded to try fat after my GP said that I wasn't eating enough and that there is evidence to show that people who do cut their calories for long periods struggle to lose weight. That's why I increased my fat intake by eating cheese without counting calories and even using cream on occasions. I have gained about 8 kgs since that advice and I have now decided to cut dairy. Lets see how it goes.
