Hi everybody,
i havent been on this in a while.A couple of months back I left a message titled Help.I was in such a baad way my sugar readings were in the 20's ,a few at 30 and on a 'good' day about 16!I was so depressed ,crying everyday ,afraid to go outside and petrified to go anywhere alone.I got soo parnoid about my diabetes I was testing 20 times a day!
Since them I was hospitalised for a month ,the doctors played around with my insulin while I was in hospital and finall settled o a split levemir dose 15/15 units 9 am/pm and 8 units of novorapid premeals.I was aslo put on antidepressants.I have to say how amazing I feel now.My blood is now about 4 in the morning,7 before lunch, although i get some 15 pre dinner its back to 8 before bed!!!I have had a few hypos which do scare me but Im learning not to be scared.Diabetes really aint that bad after all.I was soo afraid to go newhere before ,and now I'm off to New York at easter!!

I would really like to say to all of those people feeling down about their diabetes at the mo,that I no you probly feel like s**t at the moment and you are probly sick of people saying this but it REALLY does get better ,Trust me I've been there!!

Smile ,Be happy:D

P.S has nebody any advise about traveling to America with diabetes??

Glad to hear you've got control, lahdida.I would ask your doctor for plenty suppies of insulin to take with you and also a cover note for customs etc.Do you have good medical insurance if you are going to US?

Knowledge is the key to control

Hi Lahdida, well done with your diabetes and for sharing your success with others, I am sure your message will inspire others on. Have a lovely holiday you deserve it take care junieliz

Hi lahdida,

Well done for thinking ahead. I've seen diabetics prevented from boarding in the past because they had no proof that what they were carrying really was essential medicine.

As well as plenty of spare insulin, you will also need a spare prescription from your doctor. In an emergency if you should need more while in the States you can take the UK prescription to a doctor there and he will give you a local prescription with no problem - but you will have to pay for the prescription and the insulin supplied - a US pharmacy will not accept a UK prescription.

Also get your GP to give you a letter addressed "to whom it may concern" stating that you are diabetic and that it is essential that you are allowed to carry medical supplies in your hand luggage. The airlines will always comply if you have a GP's letter, but they can refuse to let you board if you don't have one.

Finally I suggest that, if you don't already have one, you get a Frio bag. This is designed to be carried in hand luggage and will keep your insulin chilled for up to 24 hours. Don't ever pack your insulin in the hold luggage - it will get smashed to pieces!

Enjoy the trip!

Thank you all for your replys ,headind to the doc 2morro to colect my letter for customs! Thanks for the tip aboout the frio bag,I dont know if they sell them in ireland I'll have to check it out! Will the time diferences affect me much im confused about it ?!!

Hi Lahdida

Frio bags are sometimes sold by chemists or pharmacies, but you can order them over the net and they send them all over the world. Their web address is
http://www.friouk.com/

Hi Iahdida. Hope you continue to feel better about things. It's swings and roundabouts really but you'll get there in the end and find you have longer periods of being in control than not.

Dennis, I just caught your post about the frio bag and was wondering if anyone uses this for their byetta (sorry, I'm obsesses!). It gets quite hot travelling and I was thinking about one for my pen - anyone used it for this purpose?

Thanks
Norma

Hi Norma,

I tend to travel quite a bit and have often used one. In fact we wre off to Egypt for 8 days first thing tomorrow and my Byetta pen will be nicely chilled in my Frio bag and carried with me in hand luggage.
