Hi :) I am 19 and I have been type 1 since I was 5 years old. I have heard that as a diabetic there are certain jobs that you cant do. I am thinking about getting into Nursing and I am just wondering will this be effected because of me having type 1?

Hi Jodie :)

Good to hear your plans on becoming a nurse.

Generally Type 1 diabetes is not a bar to undertaking nurse training providing you can demonstrate you have a commitment to taking care of your diabetes through whatever insulin regime you use and careful monitoring of blood glucose levels.
The less well controlled your diabetes is the higher the risk you present to a prospective nurse training establishment.

Your diabetes team and/or GP will have to submit a medical report on your diabetes to the occupational health service for the respective University/School of Nursing you apply to.

In addition you will probably find that your knowledge of diabetes is far superior to those of the doctors and nurses undertaking your occupational health assessment.

Nurse training is extremely challenging & even more so in the target driven NHS but having survived Type 1 Diabetes myself for 39 years and nursing for 26 years I am very much glad I had the opportunity to undertake a fulfilling career.

Best wishes

Txx

Hi Jodie.
As kewgirl says plus.....

There is a load of information out there about Nursing as a career. Here is a link to a good place to start, The Royal College of Nursing.

http://www.rcn.org.uk/nursing/becomenurse

The contact details are all there - phone them and get the up to date information and the CORRECT information. They will know what it is.

I would imagine if you are a well controlled Type 1 there shouldn't be any problems.
