Diabetes and Binge Eating Disorder

I have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes today. I also suffer from binge eating disorder and can't walk past the college shop to my classroom without buying food. I'm constantly hungry and there's nothing the medical profession can do about the hunger. I'm worried I might endanger my life by binging when I am diabetic. My diabetes is just diet controlled as yet. I am waiting for an appointment with a diabetic nurse. I am also totally blind, and have been since birth. Please advise me, I don't want to kill myself.

Welcome to the forum.

When I was first diagnosed at the beginning of the year I knew I had to change my eating habits PDQ.

I now take 2 acai tablets daily and I can honestly say that all my previous junk food cravings have disappeared. I used to be a chocaholic, but now I haven't eaten a single piece of chocolate since 1st Jan this year.

I thought Easter would be tough, but to be honest it was a doddle. For the first time in his life my 22 year old son had peace to eat his Easter eggs without dad pinching half of them. :D

The moderators on here are a bit strict about forum users posting links, but I buy mine from ebay. Make sure you buy the high strength ones.

You certainly have a few issues to deal with but you have found a good place to find information and ask questions. 8)

There are no quick or easy answers I’m afraid and you have to put effort into just about anything and everything. There are so many things in life which can be addictive and food is clearly a fairly major one. You are now obviously going to have to get this one by the scruff and control it and your condition but the good thing is that there are always folk around on here to help.

Food is key to controlling diabetes but once you get your head round it all it is not so very difficult. If you look on the ‘greetings’ threads you will find advice to newly diagnosed T2s on quite a few of those. (Sue or Ken, who are Forum Monitors, may well post the ‘official’ one on here very soon.) Explore as many of the different threads as you can and ask whatever questions you need or just let it all out and have a rant if you want to! :roll: :)

:cry: I just don't know what to do. I know I won't be able to walk past the college shop 3 times in one day without buying food. My willpower is zero. Any advice on what I could buy, they sell sandwichs and fruit? bear in mind I have had my dinner or breakfast before I go into college, but I never feel full for long enough to get past the shop without buying anything due to my disorder.
 
By realising and admitting you have a problem you are half way there.

This is your wake up call.

Only you can do this, no one can do it for you.

You've identified the problem, now you need to take responsibility for your own actions.

Swap your bad eating habits for good ones. If you must eat between meals then eat healthy snacks. Fruit such as apples, nuts (almonds & walnuts), crisp bread, etc.

You CAN do this. All the help and guidance you need is right here on this forum.

As we have said you are the one who has to take control.

You say that you can't walk past the shop without buying so I suggest to you that you pack yourself a healthy snack and take no money with you. No money - no purchase! :)
 
You could binge eat on lettuce... I know it's not the same.

My own opinion is that diabetics have probably got the hunt-for-food gene because their ancestors came from a place where they either found food - or died. So binging might be the result of a particularly a strong gene in this respect.

Your genes don't know that the world has moved on from the Stoneage.
Tell yourself that there is no food shortage - and there is not likely to be one.

You have complete control whether you eat or not - but you don't to eat a lot to survive.

I also think that people tend to overeat when stressed.

So be honest with yourself and ask yourself why you are stressed (it's difficult to be really honest about this as we are all supposed to cope with what life throws at us) and what can you do to lighten your stress load.

:cry: I was diagnosed type 2 diabetic in April. I also suffer from binge eating disorder. I Can't walk past the college shop without going in. If I do I suffer from the most awful grief and even a pat on the back doesn't work. I have to walk past the shop 4 times to get to and from class. I am waiting to see a diabetic nurse and will be on a combination of medication and a diet plan. They will have to find a more sophisticated blood sugar checking method as I am totally blind. Any advice on how I can help myself in the meantime?

It often helps to understand what our own issues are that have led us to have any sort of addiction. Many people have found that a Twelve Step programme helps to make the changes needed to become healthy and perhaps there is an Over eaters Anonymous or similar you could get to. A good psych is also crucial to do some work on issues. It is hard to expect that we can just switch to eating the "right type of food" or portion limiting to improve our condition until we can make the fundamental changes within ourselves.
I would encourage you to take the steps to find out how powerful and wonderful you really can be and you will find that you can walk past that bakery. Take one day at a time.
