Diabetes and blisters/blister treatment(feet)

Hi, I'm type 1 and have been for almost 7 years now.

I've always had problems with my feet - mainly blisters - and was wondering whether anyone has got advice on good ways to prevent or treat them effectively.

Can diabetics use anti-blister gel ?

Any good socks that have worked well for you ?

I can't walk for more than about half an hour without getting them(so I've virtually always got them somewhere on my feet) and I'm going on a short break for a few days at the end of the month and don't want them to spoil the trip like they normally do.

It's definitely not athletes foot. I've just got very sensitive feet and very high arches which doesn't help.

Thanks :D

Hello and welcome to the forum. :)

May I suggest that you ought to pay a visit to your podiatrist or DN to get their advice?

Hi and thanks.

I actually saw the nurse on Friday(6-monthly check up) and she told me to phone the podiatrist as well. But I probably won't get an appointment for a couple of months so I was just wondering whether anyone has the same sort of problems and what they do to prevent or treat them.

Concerning the blister gel, I know I should probably just look on the back of the pack to find out :D

Thanks

Hi Rj
Blisters are definitely not a good thing.
As has been suggested, the podiatrist is what you need. I know their appointments are like gold dust.
Isaw mine last week and she likes my toe socks. These protect my individual toes. Ibuy silk ones from TOE TOE online. they aren't cheap, but work. I have Morton's feet, which are difficult to get footwear for( this is a congenital condition and not diabetes related) the other thing is to get shoes with deep wide toe boxes, which FIT. Too big can be as bad as too small, so if your feet are wide, you will need a specialist supplier. Somewhere that stocks Hotter or Clarks shoes. A foam insole may help too

I have Morton's toes too and flat feet which roll inwards, finding shoes is a NIGHTMARE. Have you ever thought about custom made orthotics? I got some from a podiatrist who took a non weight bearing cast of my feet...they are great. PM me if you want more info.

Also, not sure if its the toes thing that does this or not, but I get blisters on the inside edge of my feet, even after 15 mins of walking a day!!

Oswald Baileys sell anti blister walking socks. They have a double layer to prevent friction against the skin. Quite pricey though!.
