hi all,
I'm T2 and my hba1c levels have gone from 71 to 46 to 45. However I still feel tired all the time and generally no energy. My doctor has noticed my liver enzymes are a bit wrong and is sending me for an ultrasound on my liver. Has anyone else had issues with their liver whilst being T2?
Thanks

Type 2 can cause NAFLD (Non alcohol fatty liver disease). The liver is an amazing organ and is the only one that can regenerate itself, up to a point. Fatty deposits can affect liver function and visceral fat also diminishes the liver's efficiency. Lowering your A1c is the best thing that you could have done and well done on your numbers, by the way.
I am not saying that this is what your GP is sending you for the ultrasound for just that NAFLD seems to be prevalent in T2s. All you can do is have the ultrasound and wait for the results, easy to say not to worry but try not to stress out too much. Good luck.

Which particular liver enzymes? Do you have your test results, particularly ALT and Gamma GT (GGT). These are markers for fatty liver problems.

In my case drinking lots of fruit juice was partly to blame for me getting both at the same time, but yet the GP did not consider them to be related.

Orange juice is a very strange one for me
When I was first diagnosed I tested carton 'pure' orange juice' and bottled '100% freshly squeezed orange juice" - small amounts of either sent my sugars ballistic. On the other hand when I juiced oranges myself, I could drink the resulting juice by the half pint glass with no impact on my sugars. 20+ years on I can still drink my own orange juice ( albeit much less) whereas a test of the others a few years ago led to a massive rise. Sadly I cant be ***** faffing about doing all the juicing necessary for what would now have to be a small glass of OJ so am now a juice free zone

Hi all,
Afraid I dont know which enzymes are high. She has said it may be a case of medication making them high but obviously the fact she is sending me for an ultrasound worries me a bit, I had a blood test yesterday so awaiting results from that

It is important you get copies of your test results. You can then analyse them yourself, and ask on here if you don't understand. The same goes for previous sets of tests. That will help you compare and see if there is any deterioration and when it started. They should also include all the other tests you had, including glucose and cholesterol. If you are in England you could ask if your surgery puts test results on-line and how to access these.

Thank you for that info. I shall ask about if they do online results. Didn't know you could see them online. Thanks

In England only, all surgeries were asked to put these on-line from April 2016. Not all surgeries have complied, but most seem to have.

That's because they select the sweetest oranges for making juices (demonte).
The sweetest oranges have the most frutose.

Dont think it was that - the ones I juiced were also sweet as was the juice - I always thought it was something to do with either 1) the UHT treatment of juice to increase shelf life or 2) over concentration of fruit in commercially availible juice 3) genetic engineering - I have only ever juiced organic non gm oranges

It must be the level of other sugars as frutose does not increase BG it directly becomes fat in the liver.

I recently had a similar concern for a different reason and was advised that in one study >83% of diabetics had a problem with their liver and it was likely some of the others had had in the past. Whether or not it is a problem for your health your doctor will let you know. It seems we have to be very careful of the side effects of every drug we take. Even paracetamol. I have had to go tea total on the basis of better safe than sorry. Sigh. Sorry.

"High BG" + "High Insulin" = "fat everywhere"

As Type2 is mostly due to insulin resistance, so most Type2 at least at the beginning have much higher levels of insulin than is normal.

The liver transforms the "High BG" + "High Insulin" into fat, and if the fat can not leave the liver quickly enough you get fatty liver. Then may be before or after the BG goes out of control.

Spoke to reception at doctors. My liver function blood result is 'satisfactory' and no they don't do online results at this time. See what my scan results bring?

Did you ask for the print outs, to see exactly what they think "satisfactory" is? I recommend you do.

I have my print out. My serum gamma GT level is 120 u/l and my Serum ALT level is 53 u/l. These are the only 2 that are high. Any thoughts appreciated
Thanks
