Hello. I am looking to find volunteer work or training to qualify to help diabetes or sight impaired people. Can anyone suggest where I can source info to get me started?
After 10 yrs helping my elderly Mum abroad with her various daily difficulties, I am taking a career break & may train to help. Mum was wheelchair bound mostly, very poor sight, many health problems, all from diabetes. She lived independantly as she wished, And I found it hard to leave on visits after witnessing struggles reading med bottles, eyedrops, instructions, organising meds, schedules. Also I want to perhaps help get diabetics to physio or keep active. Looking to help locally at first in Worcs/Glos. Any advice? Many thanks

Hi @PenelopeP and welcome to the forum :)

That's very admirable of you, I believe the easiest way to help in regards to volunteering is to contact your local GP and ask them about volunteering your services, they should be able to put you in touch with the right people from there, also contact Diabetes UK https://www.diabetes.org.uk/ They too can put you in touch with local groups, good luck :)

What a fab goal.

Most areas have some kind of voluntary assistance organisation.
Where my parents live (village, about 8 miles from hospital, with v poor bus service), there is a group of volunteers who offer their services transporting people to and from appointments; clinics, doc, dentist, opticians, physio, osteo, chiro, etc.

The person receiving the lift makes a payment to the organisation, while the person offering the 'taxi service' gets their petrol costs paid. My parents volunteered for years, and became very familiar with the best parking, access, and so on.

I am sure that registering with an organisation like that would be a good springboard into further services you might be able to offer.
