Hi all,
So I’m fairly new to all this but during my diagnosis phone call with my GP she said she wants me to get some checks done I’m guessing on the type of diabetes ? But also as to why it has occurred in someone young like me? I am 20 years old.

Just today in the post I have been given a letter of a referral to a Diabetes Clinic in Heartlands hospital . If anyone has any ideas as to what happens there or if they have actually been to the Heartlands diabetes clinic I would really appreciate it. Also I don’t really know about this hospital but I am use to another one can I possible change to there or not?

Thank you in advance it just feels like so much to juggle in a short amount of time :(

however will stay positive !

Hi and welcome to the forum!
Can you tell us a little more about the symptoms that have led your doc to diagnose diabetes and how you are being treated?
He is right to send you to a specialist who will likely want to check whether you're making your own insulin still and just not responding to it very well (type 2) or have a decreasing amount of insulin in your body because you've had an autoimmune reaction (type 1). Sometimes younger people present as type 2 but go on to be diagnosed as type 1 or LADA particularly if they are not acutely ill with very high blood sugars when first seen. The diagnosis is crucial because you will need very different treatment.
Re the location, you can but try ringing up the consultant's secretary to see if he or she runs a clinic in your preferred hospital.
Either way it is all manageable so I hope you'll come back in and tell us how its going. Yes it is overwhelming but take one step at a time.

A referral to a consultant is the best thing.. they will order tests the GP won’t

T2 can happen to young as well as old.. and there are increasing cases in slim people too

However there could be a concern of t1 so they may want to clarify that

I can’t see any real details about you…

If you are not overweight then there is a possibility of t1/LADA again this can happen at any age

@NicoleC1971 thank you , everyone on here has been so supportive and helpful!

So I have been feeling general tiredness for a while now and I thought it would go away with coffee oops but it didn’t. So Gp did a blood test and my HbA1c came back at 53 and then this was repeated a few months later with a fasting blood test too and I was then formerly diagnosed. Currently I have changed my diet (low carb) and incorporating exercise to my daily routine alongside a calorie deficit to lose weight. Hope these combined will cause a reduction in my HbA1c.

oh right I see honestly before I was even diagnosed I only thought diabetes is either type 1 or type 2 but now I realise there is so many more types.

Thank you so much for the kind words! That gives me the strength to carry on :). Have a lovely weekend

@KK123 that is great to hear! Thank you so much for the insight :).
I just prefer QE more due to family experiences however with you saying that I may just stick to Heartlands.

@searley thank you for your response!

I see I didn’t even look at it that way but that makes sense. I assume I am type 2 due to my mother also being type 2 although she no longer has it and I am overweight too so that’s another reason.
But like you said I guess better finding out now so I can adapt if needed.

I guess I’m just new to all this. I have never been to a hospital before not for myself anyways I’ve devoted my life caring for my mum and never thought my health would be compromised but here we are . Just hope the future is bright!

but wish you a great weekend!
