Type of diabetes
Type 1
Treatment type
Pump
A wide ranging discussion, very rambling as these things are but a lot of issues raised. (so many that there wasn't much depth)
One of the main participants has T1, 3 (I think)have T2.
Some of the subjects:
failure of people to receive all nine care processes.
Low levels of people with insulin pumps (4% of T1s in UK at moment)
if it were raised to 12% one study suggested there would be a saving to the NHS of 60 million pounds!
Symptoms of T1 not widely known
Sports facilities and diabetes
Lack of access to preventative foot care , saving of £34 million annually if late referrals to specialist teams were halved
Preventative measures (diet)
early testing.
Poor choice of food available in commons tea room (for everyone but particularly those with D)
Salt and fat reduction in processed foods.
Children as young as 7 with T2,
the promotion of sugary foods to children

Blood glucose strip rationing (at 96W) only actually mentions T1 so not clear if the minister is talking about T2 as well.
She does say that 'people with diabetes who use strips need to use them and often need to use many in a day. I am not happy if there is any form of rationing of those strips'

As many as one in four young people are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

If this comment is true, we have a serious problem with our children's start in life.

So where do we start.

Roy. :)

Thanks Phoenix,

Another point I picked up on,was MP's expenses , did MP Jim Shannon make a false claim on his expense's for junk food that caused his Type 2 diabetes.
I was diagnosed four years ago. With me, it was down to bad eating habits, stress and the fact that there were no set hours to my job. I ate whatever was quickest, and that was Chinese, usually with two bottles of coke, five nights a week. That was why I was 17 stone.

Or am I just throwing stones in glass houses.

When I was a Internal Auditor for a large company, disciplinary action was taken when employees made false claims regarding junk food.

Roy. :)

A step in the right direction

Baroness Young who is the Chief Executive of Diabetes UK talks about test strip rationing in the Jan-Feb edition of Balance, Diabetes Uk have raised this issue with The Department of Health who are considering their recommendations.

To quote the whole paragraph:
I would also like to say a word about children and young people with diabetes. As many as one in four young people are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The UK has the highest number of children diagnosed with diabetes in Europe and, sadly, the lowest number of children attaining good diabetes control. Christine Cottrell, a diabetes nurse specialist from Warwick, told The Daily Telegraph last July:

I think that particular diabetes nurse needs some urgent retraining, that or the Daily Telegraph need to wash their ears out. I know where my money would be if I had to bet on who the misquote came from. Clue, it wouldnt be the nurse

On a more serious note I think its great that its being debated at all
