Hi I was wondering if any diabetic ladies out there have children with autistic spectrum disorders, ie, aspergers syndrome or adhd, semantic pragmatic learning disorder. My son does and I am a type 1 diabetic, I went on a Dafne course last week and all the women on the course had children with these conditions. It made me really curious, is there a link to diabetes? Also how do I attach the smilies to my message? Help. Ta. :?

this might not be relevant but i have type 2 and my sister had gestational diabetes in both pregnancies and our other sister has a boy with autism, probably just random

I had gestational diabetes and my whopper of a baby arrived a month early and spent a few days in special care with jaundice due to complications in delivery.
He is now 12 and is dyspraxic. He is a bright boy and has done very well at school but he has some difficulties with his dyspraxia, mostly around social issues and his organisational abilities and he has a very low tolerance for frustration. Dyspraxia isn't just about coordination and being clumsy. When he was in year 2 his teacher wondered if he might have ADHD. Dyspraxia (and dyslexia and my hearing impairment) is on the same spectrum as Aspergers, ADHD and autism.
His father is also dyspraxic, which must also be a factor. I think that with many things, as knowledge has grown more things are diagnosed, especially at the milder end of the spectrum. And also the whole point of there being a spectrum is that it does not just have to be the heavy end with major problems.
I'm sure that spending several months being preserved in excess sugar can't be good for developing brain tissue. We know what that high blood glucose does to us as adults with diabetes. Scientific proof is another thing tho...

Thanks very much for all your thoughts and experiences. I was just amazed that all of the women on this course of only 8 people and 4 being mothers, had children with autistic spectrum conditions. There is quite a lot of diabetes in my family and the autistic gene as well. Linking them together never entered my mind before this DAFNE course. :? Still confused and suprised

My three boys all have AS and dyspraxia and the youngest two have language disorders and behavioural difficulties as well. I have Type 2 on both sides of the family, as does my husband, but also some children of cousins with dyslexia and other developmental problems. etc, born to parents with no diabetes. I didn't have it myself either when pregnant, only just recently diagnosed and my kids are teenagers.
