I work with patients who have a stoma and some are diabetic, eating low carb is very difficult as the diet for people with stomas tends to be very carb heavy, many veg etc limited , are there any ideas as bskacing diabetes and stomas is a real challenge and can affect output etc

Hi @Lazycat6 & welcome to the forum :)

We can’t give advice that deemed to be medical and I’m not sure we have many members with experience of stoma bags but perhaps there maybe someone who can share their experience & knowledge with you

Edited by myself to correct a spelling mistake

Hi @Lazycat6 and welcome to the forum.
I'M in remission from T2 Diabetes (by use of Low Carb way of eating) and my brother has a stoma. We can eat much the same as each other and have had several meals together, though since he has never been diabetic he eats bread and more carbs in general.

If you have specific dietary questions about which foods suit both conditions then I can contact him about them.

Having a stoma means there is no large intestine to hod digested food and remove liquid from it. From what I know, this presents 2 problems:
1. The need to eat highly digestible food.
2. The need for nutrient dense food because volume is a problem when there is limited space to hold it.

A mainly meat or animal based Low Carb way of eating, at least at first glance, appears the perfect diet for this situation because of it being quickly digested, low in fibre and nutrient dense.

Edited to add in animal based (must not forget fish and seafood).

Thanks I was just trying to see what experience people with diabetes and stomas may have had
