I recently agreed to take part in a research project set up by DARE to study type 2 diabetics in the SW.
I went to my local Medical Centre today and had all the usual physical measurements taken, which will then be combined with my GP's medical records. In addition they took a sample of blood which will have the DNA extracted and they will then look for genetic markers which indicate a propensity towards developing diabetes. The remaining blood serum and plasma will also be used research studies.
As far as I understand what they are doing, they seem to pursuing the idea that type 2 diabetes arises from specific genes which are then switched into effect by environmental factors such as diet, lifestyle or anything else. For example they have identified the onset of diabetes being triggered by large doses of steroids given to treat a particular illness.Where no genetic markers are identified they might also ask to test partners presumably to check whether purely environmental factors are responsible.
Overall my impression is that they see the onset of diabetes as being the result of multiple factors, and very far removed from simple theories involving weight and exercise.
If you get the chance to be involved in this sort of research I think it could in the long term be very valuable to future diabetics.
