Ive been a diabetic for around 17 years. Ive had an up and down experience of treatment ranging from good at first then unfortunately bad right down to dire.
I used to have my diabetes treatment in our local hospital which is a centre for diabetes but when i moved a little further outside of newcastle i had to change as i was just outside the catchement area and i was gutted and ive got to say the treatment ive had since (or lack of) is awful.
Diabetic nurse at my new surgery refused my medication as after taking my bloods she decided i wasnt a diabetic, because id always kept my levels really well at around 5 to 6 when they did my blood tests they averaged them out and as i say always kept in those ranges. I had a stand up row with her as it really upset me the way she treat me. Anyway It took me nearly 2 yrs to get a second opinion and the consultant i saw confirmed i definitely was a diabetic and offered me my metformin back again but he said it was up to me of course if i wanted to take it as id been off it for a while.
Ive been medication free for about 4 years now and try my best to manage it alone but my weights really yoyo'ing and i have lots of lows...but saying that i always have even when on meds.
I need some advice as im going to do slimming world as im a good 5 or 6 stone overweight and wonder if anyone has any experience of them and how it affected their levels but im desperate to loose weight as it affecting my foot as ive got lymphoedema and it swells everyday and is quite painful.
Thanks in advance for any replies

So sorry for only replying now carol but only noticed your reply but id given up on any replies.
I'm starting back to sw next Tuesday so hoping it'll do the trick again as it really helped last time
good luck with yours carol

Just getting ready to rejoin sw tonight so hoping to get the weight I need off this time round and im determined to do it this time im fed up of feeling so tired and suffering so many lows. Was at my diabetes review the other day and im tiredo being told YOU DO NOT HAVE LOWS when you take one metformin!!! ....but I do!! ... but try to convince a nurse who treats everyone like a textbook is nigh on impossible
my sugar levels used to be spot on but are so erratic these days.
Off now to see if ive put weight on since I was last at a sw class :)

I did weight watchers a few years ago and lost 3 stone but slowly put it back on again. I'm now on a vegan diet as I can do this with the diabetes and I find it's much easier than counting points or calories. It's basically super healthy, low fat, low cholestorol and there are a lot of yummy recipes online - although I do cheat a bit and sometimes eat quorn products which strict vegans aren't allowed, but it's a diet to lose weight, not a lifestyle choice so I'm not bothered really! I haven't missed meat or even cheese, although struggling slightly without fish or eggs! It's really not as extreme as everyone seems to believe though.
You must do some exercise with it too, it will get that fat shifted much faster and you'll feel so much better after doing it. Plus it will help to keep the weight off after the diet - my biggest problem was leading a sedentary lifestyle which I've now fixed doing regular aqua classes and a weekly gym session.
I feel so much better on this diet and with the exercise, which isn't full-on or scary, I can highly recommend it.
Good luck.
