Diabetes Type 1 & Travelling

Hi,

I have just found this forum when researching travelling with Diabetes on Google. I am wondering if any of you can help me or give me advice...

I am 21 years old and have had Type 1 Diabetes for 19 years, I will be finishing university next year and I am considering going travelling for a year or 3 months (undecided) around California with my boyfriend, we will be moving around all different areas and will be camping a few nights in a row. I am worried how I can go travelling with just a backpack with Type 1 Diabetes. I have an insulin pump so I will need to take my insulin vials with me along with all my needles, reservoirs, lancets, strips etc.

How can I fit all this in a backpack along with my clothes and toiletries & how can my insulin last for up to 3 days when I am camping.

I hope there are ways around it as I don't want my diabetes to stop me from travelling to a place I've always wanted to go too!

Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

You might find this link useful: you can almost certainly order it over the Internet and I'm sure that there are other posts on the website.

Re: Diabetes Type 1 & Travelling

I can personally vouch for those frio bags, they work really well. I have T1 and walked the GR20 mountain route across Corsica a couple of years back, had everything for two weeks in my pack - and it was hot, but those Frios worked well. Don't forget hypo treatment and have fun!

Listen to all the good advice that you can! Never let diabetes control you! Best of luck on your travels, you will have a ball & it'll be something to tell the grand kids !

Hi! I am interested by your comment. I plan to do the gr20 too with T1. I want to do like you but wonder how do you cool down/freeze your frio packs? Is there freezer in the refuge you use or did you do differently?
Thanks!

This is an old thread.
However, I can answer your question about Frio. They are not frozen. In fact, you should avoid getting your insulin too cold.
Frio cool the insulin by evaporation. They can be resoaked at any time and do not need cold water.
I have used them when travelling in very hot areas with no electricity such as camping and trekking in Venezuela.
I recommend checking out the Frio website for further information.
