hi i have a daughter who is type one diabetes, and i am starting to suspect her brother may have it,drinks alot wets the bed so i toke him to doctors he was only 7.8 but sent us to hospatal because there a slight trace of sugar in urnie when we got there they were not concerned sent us home,my daughters nurse recomened i test his blood sugar levels 2 hours after a meal lunch time he was 10.9
tea he was 6.1 after alot of exercise.i will test him again tomorow morning but not sure what to do from here it seems abit of a mixed bag.any advice?

Hi,

I'd talk to the first doctor you saw and get some tests done to rule out other possiblities as well as diabetes.

He/She must have a level head to spot the glucose in the urine, i'm sorry the hospital weren't as sensible.

If he starts to feel unwell and has elevated BG's again call NHS direct and they will advise you.

If in doubt and the BG's are very high i woul take him straight to A&E, you don't say how old he is but if he is young then i would see that as the best action!

I hope all turns out well x

hi thankyou for your reply he is 6 and feels fine but very hypo active when hes sugar is higher i guess i have to wait a see what happens over the next day or two,i dont know what else it could be but because he has had 2 normal readings i am not sure, and despite the fact i was sent by my gp the doctor at the hos
atal thought i was a time waster,so i need something more solid to go back, but my daughters nice is lovely so hopefuly i might get some joy there.thanks again xxx

Infections can cause higher sugars and if it was a urinary infection it could explain bed wetting?!

but i hope you get to the bottom of it soon, and speaking to your daughters diabetes care team sounds like a good idea!

They could do an antibody test? There has been some success in Australia with nasal sprays that delay the onset of diabetes.

As you already have a T1 daughter you know what to look for and what to do if your son becomes unwell but sadly there is nothing that could be done to prevent diabetes occuring. I think if it was me I'd be doing the odd test over a week or so to see what's going on (maybe the odd test every few months also).

Fingers crossed your son doesn't develop diabetes.

All the best ... only time will tell.

I was diagnosed as type one at 6 but at that stage my pancreas was only just starting to fail. I was on tiny amounts of insulin. Maybe this is the case with this problem. Just keep a very close eye on the sugar levels.

hi thankyou fot all the replys we been testing his bloods today first reading was 5,13.8 9.6 9.2 and then 6.6 after a very long walk.theses were taking two hours after eating and before breakfast, and bed. so its still unclear hes going to hospatal tomorow for gluocose test,so i guess we will see then.i hate going there to be honest but it has to be done to be on the safe side.either way theses results seem odd and he does have some symtoms lets hope we get a good doctor. :D
