I have recently watched a television programme on heart transplants and was surprised to hear diabetic cardiomyopathy mentioned. Why don't we diabetics hear more about this disease? Is it because the emphasis is on 'things won't go wrong if you keep good control'?

People who are touchy.......feign indignation at the slightest thing. Hypocrites, bullies and cowards.
The evidence is there and has been for over 30 years..........it is just another risk factor that is taken into account when Consultants etc are estimating a Patients risks of developing other diseases/conditions and who are Diabetic.

Here is a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diabetic_cardiomyopathy

Wikipedia has a straightforward explanation about the subject. There are many, more technical papers available if you wish to know more than the above article.

I wasnt aware that cardiomyopathy was also linked to Diabetes . My Dad has Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy , and me my sister and brother have all been taking part in gene trials at the London Heart Hospital and they found that I carry the gene. They told me just because I carried the gene didnt mean Id actually get it. I was recently diagnosed with a heart murmur and because of the history of cmo in the family they wanted me to see a specialist, he told me that I dont need to do anything until Im 50 then go for a ECG unless I get symptems of short breath dizines etc . CMA website is great :) http://www.cardiomyopathy.org/index.php?id=1 :)
