Type 1 Diabetic child feeling sick and full quickly

Hi everyone

Just wondering if any one else's child has experienced this, and if so, how did you solve the issue.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes at 18 months, and is now 8. She is currently on a Medtronic Paradigm Veo - 754 pump. She has been on this for approx four and a half years.

In June this year, she felt sick. Vomited quite a lot and lost her appetite. Managed to keep her levels as stable as possible.

Since then, practically every day she says that she feels sick, although she hasn't physically been sick. Not sure whether it is related to her diabetes as her bloods are stable.

We have been to the doctors, had full blood count, everything came back fine but her immune system was slightly low. Doctor gave her medicine for her stomach acids, but it doesn't seem to do anything.

Recently, when she has been eating, she gets full really fast. Before she would finish her meals no problem, but now is saying that she feels full halfway through her meal. Breakfast is particularly bad, She is at the table sometimes up to 20 minutes and is still only partway through it. It looks like she is struggling to get through it, and looks tired/bored, as if eating it is a chore.

The sickness she feels can come at any point, even if we are doing nice things like being at parties or the cinema, so we know it is genuine and she isn't doing it for attention. It's not nice for her, feeling sick all the time, because she can't fully enjoy the things she used to do.

If any one could shed a bit of light on what it could be, that would be greatly appreciated.

Glad to be a part of this wonderful community!

Hi and welcome to the forum, has your daughter been tested for coeliac disease?

Welcome to the forum @natalieb249

If it were my child I'd be asking for a referral to the gastroenterology clinic, I really do hope that they find out the cause and your daughter gets better soon. Best wishes.

Hi, thanks for the response! Yes she had that tested in her full blood count, and it came back clear.
Coeliac test is a separate blood test, nothing to do with full blood count.
I suggest you have a talk with her hospital consultant as the problem needs sorting. Also have a look at the medication she was given does it say side effects can cause nausea?

I don't know if this is relevant, but I thought I'd mention it. My daughter does not have diabetes, but she did have nausea for months and months. She originally had some kind of Gastro-enteritis or food poisoning, but that seemed to have gone away. However, the nausea and generally not feeling 'right' remained. She also went off her food.

She had various blood tests, none of which showed a definite answer (although some things were slightly out of range). Eventually the doctor concluded it was a post-viral problem that was being slow to go away. As she found the nausea most troubling, he prescribed medication for that to be taken when necessary (that might not be appropriate for your child - I'm just saying what the doctor did for mine). She still has phases, but her problems have gradually reduced.

It took us ages to get a diagnosis and I was worrying a lot. So my advice is to keep politely pushing.

I hope she feels better soon :)

I hope it isn't, in your case, but gastroparesis is a known diabetic complication and isn't always picked up by doctors very quickly - definitely worth looking into.

Thank you so much to everyone who has taken the time to reply to me, its very much appreciated. I have taken her back to the doctors today, He thinks her stomach is passing through food much slower than it should be, so this is laying in her stomach causing the sickness. We are now being referred so this can be looked into further. Fingers crossed we can finally get some answers.
