Just wish they'd standardise on these things for carb counting purposes as to whether a polyol really is a carbohydrate or not when it comes to carb counting for low carbers and diabetics on hypoglycaemic medication.

That's difficult, because they ARE a carbohydrate, but the theory is that they count as zero for BG purposes. This is not correct, and I have seen some suggestions that polyols count as half for bg calculations. This seems about right to me after much experimentation and testing!
The concern with the diabetic labelling is that people will think "it's diabetic chocolate, I can eat what I want" - and you can't. But most of these products have a "portion" sizxe on the nutritional info, and if you stick to that you are unlikely to get bad BGs or tummy probs; although some people apparently do, so try and see I guess. Personally, I like this stuff as small trerats now and again. Currently, as per another thread I started, I'm getting belgium "Cavalier" chocolates, which are only sweetened with Stevia (natural product) and Erythritol (quite a few on here use that for cooking, and it's fine) They are about 20 to 25 grams carbs per 100, but only about 9 is sugar (natural sugar from ingredients like lactose) Seems fine, no tummy probs for me, and they have things like orange creams in dark chocolate, lemon and lime cream etc.

soaps on telly and people talking about the characters as if they were real.
The occasional treat doesn't affect me and the taste is acceptable

I don't know if it was McDonald's pret a manger or diabetic chocolate but last weekend I was severely ill with food poisoning having agonising stomach cramps and as if I'd taken a laxative

I had eaten a whole bar of boots hazelnut diabetic chocolate!

It was the chocolate not poisoning! As I found out at the weekend!

Discovered boots diabetic/ no added sugar chocolate (fruit & nut 100g) at the weekend. As I'm partial to a bit of chocolate and doesn't bump sugars up too much thought why not? Only had a quick glimps at the label as didn't have glasses with me 1/3 amount of sugar as normal choc oh goody me thinks.
It went like this walked out of shop thought have a couple of squares mm not bad. Driving home stuck at lights couple of squares. Got home be naughty couple of squares haven't been sat around all morning. Had nice low carb/gi lunch. I know have some choc for pudding ioops finished bar!

Well better go wash the car burn the carbs off thought I! Half hour later all done, feeling good as done a bit more exercise can watch rugby now!

Sat down to watch the rugby had felt a stirring in the stomach earlier thought nothing of it. The next 2-3 hours were spent running to the loo every 15 minutes and producing enough gas to power half the country lol!

Had a closer look at the packet with glasses on and I see small warning at the bottom - Excessive consumption may cause laxative effect!

On doing a bit of research it turns out that in small quantities lacticol is good for the gut - probiotic - but not the amount in a 100g bar!

Good news - sugars were nice and low and the chocolate was quite nice! Be warned!

I've discovered a couple dark chocolate brands which don't have much effect on my B/S. They're not labelled 'suitable for diabetics' and are way better than any diabetic branded rubbish.

They are :-

Lindt 90% ( there is also a 99 % variant)
vivani chocolate 92 (%)

both have around 13 g of Carbs per 100g

I think the spread of comments here echo my long held belief that what's right for one is wrong for another. For example, my sister bought me a diabetic selection pack at Christmas. There's still a bit of it left and the box does state: "This products contains polyols and we recommend eating no more than 20g polyols per day due to potential laxative effects. However sensitive individuals may react to levels less than this."

As with all things, your mileage will vary. There are some of us that will be fine with the painkiller Kapake while others will be constipated. Some will get similar results with a 3-egg omelette.
I can't eat anything with artificial sweetner. It not only upsets my stomach it also gives me a fuzzy headach, I get like a thunder pounding in my head. Also anything low cal, low fat good knows what is in that to make me so ill.

I sometimes buy the Lindt 90%, have also tried their 98% too but it's very bitter, tho' ok if you put a little in your mouth and sip coffee through it. Something quite exquisite about coffee/ chocolate combination ;)
