Hi there,
First time here, is this a good place for diabetic dog owners or should I try a more specified forum?

We human beings aren't the only creatures that suffer with diabetes, for in my diabetic research I found out that Horses, Dogs, Cats and even Fish can also suffer from diabetes, though their B/G levels are somewhat different from us Humans. Many Vets prescribe our Human medications as their treatment, though I don't know how you would go about injecting a Fish with Insulin if you had to. !!!

Hi this my first time on this forum. I have an 8yr old collie Tess, who has been diabetic for nearly two years
She is on 5.5 units insulin twice a day. She has gotten close to being stable a couple of times, but now she is way out and I don't think the vet knows what to do! She starts the day off at 14, has her food and insulin and walk, approx8, then rises as the day goes on up to nearly 30. 6 months ago when we were doing a curve it ran high so insulin was altered up to 6 then she had a hypo. Put it back to 3 - went high. Gradually got it back up to 5 and stayed reasonable at approx 10 where we left it. Had no problems with her, nothing noticeable until this past month when the vet suggested a check and we are all up in the air again. She has gone blind in he last year. But other than that she is In great form, enjoys her walks (off lead) has rough and tumble games with our other dogs, even chases a ball about (she hears the ball!). She loves to be loved. Needs to be under a hand most of the time - have to watch the cups of tea! Anyone else have similar problems? Any ideas, any answers. Both my husband and I are diabetics so have understood what she's been going through.

Horses with metabolic syndrome need huge quantities of Metformin.

When I was a teenager my pet poodle was diabetic. Things were very different back then, but I remember that we used to have to catch some urine each morning in a saucer and test it. We'd then adjust her insulin in accordance to how much glucose was showing on the ketostix.
We fed her on a veterinary science diet, which in hindsight was a load of **** for a load of money.
I have two tibetan terriers these days, They get fed meat, fish, and raw veggies. I couldn't recommend a better diet.

Hi there sorry I'm not able to help but I do want to say I hope you find the necessary info here to care for your dog, it's a great forum. I'm a massive dog lover and I wish him/her all the best. They are only here for such a short time, every day should be the best day of their life.
