Diabetic foot

Im hoping someone can explain what this is. Last week my diabetic nurse had a right go at me for going bare foot at home she didn't explain why just that its bad. I dont get whats wrong with being bare foot in my house theres nothing wrong with my feet I have full feelings in my feet....... totally confused

You don't have one of those manky toenails that'd put everyone off their tea?
Otherwise I'd guess she's worried about you damaging your feet. My DN frets about my plates of meat even though they're in fine fettle cos she says they're vulnerable.

She must just be worried about foot damage. I don't wear shoes inside my house either as I find it more comfortable without.

Your DN did right to have a go at you Sarah, whether you have Neuropathy in the feet or not it's not wise walking around bare footed at home, in the extremities such as the feet the healing process takes longer so if you cut yourself it could lead to all sorts of problems (such as infections, ulcers etc) which really isn't worth it, far better to buy some slippers and keep your feet safe!!!
 
According to my nurse any numbness in your foot means that if you damage it you might not be aware of the fact and just make it worse. She said that she removed a drawing pin from the sole of the foot for one patient.

She also said that any damage would be slow to heal and in some cases might result in ulceration.

OK, so I'm convinced.
 
Well you've all convinced me i should be doing more to protect my feet!

I will try to wear at least a pair of flip flops (too hot for slippers!) inside from now on.

I too hate wearing anything on my feet. Before I was diagnosed Type 1 I never wore anything on my feet, summer and winter. I even went in the garden in rain or snow !! I was given a good "talking to" by my DN and my family so now I always wear something when walking around but can't wait to kick them off when I sit down !!

One of the first things I was told - don't walk around barefoot, even indoors and check my shoes before putting them on to make sure there's nothing in them that can irritate the feet. Was glad I followed this advise as one morning I checked my shoes and found half a shrew left as a pressie from one of the moggies. :lol:

I wish I had been told that- it would have stopped me treading on the dead mouse my cat left in my boot !!

I'd just got used to walking barefoot on the lawn in the evening to help cool me down. But we do have to take care of our feet. I had a big toe nail removed some years back. When it grew again it behaved for a while then turned into an in-growing nail again. Half of it was taken off, then after quite a spell, the whole nail and root. All relatively painless, better than an in-growing nail. The old adage is 'look after your head and your feet'. Or something like that.
