Hi there, I'm 15 and have type 1 Diabetes. I was recently diagnosed in June and I'm currently worried one of my friends may be becoming diabetic. She has recently been saying she has been thirsty and has been going to bed noticeably earlier than normal, which I know are the first symptoms.I offered to test her blood sugar on an old meter and it came out as 7.2. I assumed this was fine but she later said she had not eaten a lot that day. I don't know whether when you are diagnosed you show the symptoms even before your blood sugar starts climbing but this sounds illogical. I don't want her to think it's OK and she hasn't got Diabetes and then become critically ill, ie. ketoacidosis. Is there anything you guys know about Diabetes and how you it first begins etc that I can use in my situation? On another note, she has also been drinking a lot of squash and Lucozade. I know i binged out on coke pre diagnosis, so I have no idea if it's just a virus or she is genuinely ill.
Thanks in anticipation!

Your friend is lucky to have someone like you keeping an eye on her. I'm not able to answer your questions, but I would say that your friend is not eating properly and that could be the cause of her symptoms. Skipping meals and then drinking Lucozade (should be banned in my opinion!) are bad news.

I wouldn't jump to any conclusions, although from now on you will be more wise to noticing these things.............

I am forever testing my kids BG levels when they are ill or out of sorts........its paranoia maybe.....lol.....

she is maybe just ill............but you should keep an eye on her and test her sugar levels if you can............

if she is diabetic, then nothing is going to stop it, so all you can do is monitor......

there are many conditions that present thirst and tiredness..................type 1 diabetes though usually presents severe weight loss before you would be considered as critically ill..........

eyes peeled...........:)

Thanks guys, yes I do feel it could be mainly paranoia and I haven't asked the weight loss question as I thought that could be a little rude! Thanks Jack, that helps and I shall take a look at the links now
