Sorry can't help about an account but I did Google him out of curiosity and I read some very interesting things about him , so thank you for posting about this.
I have "experimented" and have found in the past if I have been training really hard up to 3 marathons a week and cut my calories right back, and I mean right back  I have been able to gradually decrease my Insulin and able to stop it for 2 days maximum before my BG starts to just creep back up on it's own. If I then eat a normal meal it would be up through the roof. I have liked to see just how much my Liver has taken over in the past from time to time. And if it was ever possible for me to be on the bare minimum of insulin, or even cut it right out (never), and what that amount would be.
No way was it ever sustainable ,but it was nice to eek it back up again from base line, so yes ,we Type !'s can survive for a couple of days  . I would imagine this guy benefited from the hard labour and scant food which would enable him to live on the very limited amount of Insulin he had available...What a horrible sad situation to be forced into to find this out..lets hope History NEVER repeats itself, shocking story to read.
