Hi All

Can I ask that us diabetics especially younger ones.. People wanting changes with NHS and CCG ie people wanting pumps, people not getting test strips consider getting involved with their hospitals and CCGs.

Our CCG encourages meetings with patients and engagement with them and all CCGs are doing this.

The reason I ask is because I went to a meeting tonight regarding diabetics/dietetics/nutrition which was for patients in our County to attend and hive their views.

At 51 years old I was the youngest patient there.. So no hope for youngsters although I did try to help with my opinions from people that I am aware of....

There was more NHS staff than patients at this meeting. Only 7 patients from the whole of the county. The oldest person had been type 1 for 62 and out his good living and good health down to rationing and weighing all his food for 62 years since diagnosis.

The CCG were wanting to know patients views.. But some older persons still have their GPs down as Gods and so weren't forthcoming with any ideas.

There were 2 reprsentatives over 65 from diabetes uk....a GP still with views that type 2's can get away without test strips unless on hypo drugs. I asked that they consider allowing patients that want bloodstrips to self manage to be given the empowerment tools that they need..

Please can I ask that you look at your CCG websites or GP websites for Patient Engagement or Patient Participation Groups?

It was startling to me that the only patients attending these meetings are over 65 beside me. How can youngsters, get pumps or 40 year old pre diabetics etc get things changed within their CCGs without involvement??

Thanks for posting this. I honestly did know the Ccg do this and is so good to know. I am signing up as I want it all to change so thank you I've been looking for away in for sometime

Good, glad that one person can find a way in to make changes. It makes it all worthwhile to know that just one other person can help towards a better future.

At iur meeting tonight there were Drs and Consultants that head up the CCG. They were really interested in the points I made asking me to detail them. I said I would do but that they had it on film anyway or had peope taking notes...As I look lean and fit (intentionally wore my skirts and vest tshirt) and told them that self management had been key for me as I had never been offered a course (dafne etc in 30 years). I also asked people that were there in front of CCG and inckuding them "in this meeting there are a high number of obese people and how many people have been offered gym referals and told to make lifestyle changes ie NICE recomend exercise with statin advice...?" Not one single person raised their hand. People only spoke up to say they didn't even know there was a GP gym referal scheme".

Honestly, we diabetics that care need to join up to CCG patient engagement groups etc otherwise we are never going to be able to influence the way our health services are run.

Well said!
Everyone, check the link below for the CCG in your area:

If it's difficult to change policy at the upper echelons it is important to work at the local levels too.
