Diabetic labelled foods

Hello

I am writing from the BBC. I am currently doing some research on diabetes and would be very interested to hear people's opinions on food products that are labelled 'diabetic'. Please contact me via the reply email on this forum.

The offical line from the medical "experts" is that these foods are not useful to us and as such a waste of money. I personally buy "diabetic chocolate" once in a blue moon for a treat, however I find ordinary high cocoa solids dark chocolate acceptable. What would suit me would be more low carbohydrate foods readily available. There's Low fat stuff in every supermarket and no evidence thatit helps anyone. Just sometimes, I'd like a low carb treat.

i do have to agree,i tended to get diabetic chocolate as gifts, xmas etc,on looking at it , the majority has more sugar than some dark chocolate and also it is so expensive, its a total waste of money :D

Have to agree with Hana that readily available low carb foods at realistic prices would be much more helpful. Sick of paying an arm and a leg at low carb megastore.

my dn told me not to bother buying anything aimed at diabetics....not even gone down the diabetic chocolate route.

It is not neccesary to buy foods labelled diabetic, they are often misleading with hidden sugars in them and usually overpriced.Better and clearer product labelling on normal foods would be a better idea so that all products with any kinds of sugars are clearly stated.

The traffic light system needs modifying to include, where appropriate, carbohydrates either with reference to the Glycaemic Index or a percentage.

Tubs.

I've noticed that, the traffic light system thing seems to go on fat, calories etc. No mention of carbs. As if carbs are perfectly harmless little things that do no-one any harm!

Your DN is a very wise person. Like totsy, I'm often given so-called diabetic chocolate, sweets and cakes at Christmas and promptly throw them all in the bin.

Many of these products contain polyols/sugar alcohols which "may, (MAY?) have a laxative effect."

To paraphrase, "A moment on the lips, a lifetime on the can."

Ouch!

Diabetic foods: Expensive cr*p mostly containing sorbitol that gives you a day and night in the loo.

Well if ever I have a problem in that area I will know how to treat it

Had a phone chat with "Niki" this morning. Will anyone else be joining me on "Watchdog?"

Told by nurse not to even bother looking at diabetic food as it's not worth it. Higher in carbs fat etc than normal food. Looked at Thirntins range once but didn't bother with it. Expensive too

When will you be on 'Watchdog' Ian?
They want several diabetics to appear, & put out the programme before Christmas to discourage well meant gifts. She will phone again.

NEVER eat Thorntons diabetic chocolate, i only ate about 6 chocs and i was ILL never been to the loo as much in my life.

The warning on the box that says "May cause a Laxative effect" is got to be the biggest understatment of the centuary

Filming will (probably) be next Wednesday, so the programme should go out Monday before Christmas.

Who else will I meet? Any of you?
