diabetic neuropathy

I've been reading about diabetic neuropathy and just wondering whether this tends to occur once you've had high blood sugar for a long period of time, as information says this is as a result of long term nerve damage. Can this alone be considered a symptom of diabetes or generally would other symptoms present alongside this?

Also is there a self test you can do for this? I've heard that standing on your toes is one?

I would see your GP and ask for your feet to be tested if you have numbness in the toes or pads , or heel , or in the underside of the achilles.

or if you are really worried --- go to a chiropodist and explain why you want him / her to look at your feet

back in 1972 --at my diagnosis -- my feet were mentioned as one of the KEY things to look after -- so my advice is based on my long experience !!!!!!

Hi diabetes can cause nerve damage over a long time but it normally starts in the hand and feet first, this is why good BS is needed. I have ops on my hands as they thought it was carpel tunnel and a op on my elbow but none have helped. I had a SPK transplant in 2015 which went well but with my BS returning to normal the nerve damage that the diabetes had caused came to light. I now have nerve damage all over my body with pain so i have to take high level painkillers and lidocaine infusions every month, this does not take the pain away it just makes it livable for 10-12 days. I would recommend what himtoo has said as there is nothing they can do to repair the damage

Would you say the symptom concerning DN is more of an actual pain or is tingling pain just as common? And what's the frequency like? How long would you get this for each time? Like for minutes or hours at a time, every day or every week?

Hi @winglets
are you personally experiencing any symptoms , or are you asking on behalf of someone else ?

I promise I am not meaning to sound sharp or short with you -- but the frequency , duration -- are just part of symptoms -- we cannot diagnose from online -- the best bet is to get either you or a loved one checked out soonest.

outer limbs are one of us diabetic's most vulnerable parts of our bodies ( nuff said )
