Hi folks. I've been trying to get to the bottom of a problem for a long time. Background is that i was diagnosed Type 2 about a year ago with a reading of 7.1 following a routine blood test. I'm diet controlled - just had my first recheck and my levels are down to 6.6. About 15 months ago i started to get pins and needles in one hand and numbness/tingling/burning sensation on one side of my face which i now occasionally get on the opposite side also. Since then i've had a lot of different tests. An MRI showed that i have a mild prolapse disc in my neck which the neurologist said could be causing the symptoms in my hand and said the symtpoms in my face were probably caused by diabetes. My GP and nurse specialist disagreed with this based on my NBA1C reading. I just had a nerve conduction test which ruled out Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and the doctor said that the symptoms in my hand are coming from my neck. All the specialists i've seen have said that you can't get the symptoms i have in my face from a neck injury though i notice that if i strain my neck, if my posture is bad or if i lift weights those symptoms get worse. They say i am not a good candidate for spinal surgery as the prolapse disc is so mild. i just don't know where to go next.
So i guess my question is aimed at anyone who knows about diabetic neuropathy. Is it possible for nerve damage to occur and would this present with the symptoms i have when my NBA1C reading is not that high and has improved since diagnosis. I'm 43 years old. My GP says it's unlikely that i've been Type 2 for very long (though i don't know how he would know that). I was also a little shocked that my first retinopathy check showed R1 background retinopathy in one eye and again wondered how this could be at this early stage.
