diabetic neuropathy

Hi folks. I've been trying to get to the bottom of a problem for a long time. Background is that i was diagnosed Type 2 about a year ago with a reading of 7.1 following a routine blood test. I'm diet controlled - just had my first recheck and my levels are down to 6.6. About 15 months ago i started to get pins and needles in one hand and numbness/tingling/burning sensation on one side of my face which i now occasionally get on the opposite side also. Since then i've had a lot of different tests. An MRI showed that i have a mild prolapse disc in my neck which the neurologist said could be causing the symptoms in my hand and said the symtpoms in my face were probably caused by diabetes. My GP and nurse specialist disagreed with this based on my NBA1C reading. I just had a nerve conduction test which ruled out Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and the doctor said that the symptoms in my hand are coming from my neck. All the specialists i've seen have said that you can't get the symptoms i have in my face from a neck injury though i notice that if i strain my neck, if my posture is bad or if i lift weights those symptoms get worse. They say i am not a good candidate for spinal surgery as the prolapse disc is so mild. i just don't know where to go next.

So i guess my question is aimed at anyone who knows about diabetic neuropathy. Is it possible for nerve damage to occur and would this present with the symptoms i have when my NBA1C reading is not that high and has improved since diagnosis. I'm 43 years old. My GP says it's unlikely that i've been Type 2 for very long (though i don't know how he would know that). I was also a little shocked that my first retinopathy check showed R1 background retinopathy in one eye and again wondered how this could be at this early stage.

Firstly nothing is certain!!!!! so sorry

As you say you have not been diagnosed as diabetic for long and your BG levels are well controlled anyway, I would argue that nueropothy due to DB is ?very unlikley.

Your spine problem and the fact its ?squashing a nerve and ?cuasing the problems in your hand would indicate perhaps the cuase of your facial tingles. in MY opinion all nerves are linked in ways, regardless of the paths they are suposed to take (hence when i inject myself, i can at times feel it elsewhere in my body!!

You cannot rule out other cuases! but you do appear to have had some extensive investigations (though they dont show every thing)

I had the same tingles in my hands, started on getting up oneday and my whole body was alive with pins and needles (thought i was dying) it then settled a bit but really strong in my hands, i researched and discovered that vit B halps nerve damage, i overdosed for a week on vit B, now hardly get this!! i take 2 vit b tabs every day.

the other thing i noticed that if my bllod sugars are low the tingles at times come back, but go when sugar reestablished. are your sugars to low?

the above is my experiance and comments, hope they may help in some way

That’s the trouble with T2s
Type 2 diabetes is still a silent killer - most people diagnosed did not recognize early symptoms
A lot of us have ignored the symptoms just thinking run down,
I did for over year and ended up in A&E :(
You have recently been diagnosed as T2
However you don’t know how long its been creeping up on you or how long you had it? :?
Late diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes leaves people at risk of developing the complications :?

The Good thing you now know :)

Like you I have cervical spinal damage also suffer with pain in arms back neck head
burning pain (hot fat) and pin and needles like pain non stop pain in head and electric shocks
I have multi level cervical damage and told the risk of surgery is too high ,until there is nothing
to lose? I have now lost 90% of the use in right arm ,I Also suffer from diabetic neuropathy
feet
My advise is to ask to see a Pain Consultant ASAP

As the Drug treatment is much the same for spinal pain , spinal neuropathy
or diabetic neuropathy
For your cervical disk probably be offered nerve block injections I have these for my neck and lower spine I go every 6 weeks for the nerve block injections

You may also be offered nerve pain drugs the like of Amitriptyline and Gabapentin
used for neuropathic pain. For deep pain opiate based drugs like tramadol or morphine

tingling/burning sensation on one side face
yes I had the same also spasms making it difficult to swallow the spinal block deal with that
for me

You will find that just one drug treatment will not stop all the pain
need a mix of drug treatments to bring it to a bearable level with the help from your
Pain Consultant

Re:
R1 background retinopathy in one eye ---- Snap! not related are we ?
My first two eye tests came back with that , however with bg control it has not progressed
last eye test clear.
