hi
i was diagnosed type 2 5 months ago,and had to see a diabetic nutritionalist, she chatted about diet and the like and weighed me
any way i had to see her again today for a progresss check, good news i have lost over a stone and a half
but she went through my diet .and when i said i was low carbing, her whole manner changed and gave me a very stern look
why is this?..it seems to work with me so whats the problem, she also said at 43 i am quite young to have type 2 diabetes..is this the case?....also got my fasting sugars down to between 5.5 and 6.5 most of the time..is this good?
will say though ,if i hit below 4.5 i get very hungry and very tired, and if i rise to over 10 i get very fidgety and tired and cant seem to concentrate, this is still happening after 5 months..is this normal?
thanks for any answers in advance
cheers
shaun

Yes you are probably onee of the younger T2s. However, children can get it.
Fasting bg below 7 is pretty good [do remember that non-diabetics are probably below 4]
Also
we know that dieticians don't like us low carbing. they can't give us any evidence against it though Certainly a high carb diet and lots of medication can be very bad. I personally think that's the real cause of the apparent dangers found by the ACCORD study.

Well done Shaun,
I am new to this also and doing the same as you, I have yet to see my neutritionist on the 21st of this month and feel that I will get the same reaction as you when she finds out that I low carb.

I will post her reaction but will not stop low carbing as I have never felt better for years.
have also lost over a stone, keep in touch with all on this board they are fantastic and have helped me so much since joining
about 2 months ago.

My GP offered me a place on the DESMOND course, but said I wouldn't get anything out of it, (I didn't go) and i think he knows I'd hit him with his reflex hammer if he suggested I see a DNN. He is a supporter of low carbing for T2's, and he knows ULC works for me, so leaves me to get on with it, just supporting me and being there if I need help or advice.

Hi shaun

I was 43 on diagnosis(still am acutally lol) , nurse made a passing comment to being young but nothing more.

Re the low and high readings - not unusual reactions from your body. Are you getting many high ones? Is it cos you're still having the odd investigative meal? The more you can stick to what you know you can handle safetly the better.

My dietician wanted to discharged me, when I went I took all my weight loss chart and graphs for my BS all in nice band below 5.7mmol and my diet sheets, which she asked if she may keep. I think she just did not have any answers that justified why I should use NHS Diet when its so loaded with Carbs, she said I have obviously done my research and am controlling it very well, and asked if I would take the diet plan leaflet anyway, her reasoning was she has to comply with NICE and NHS guidelines. In the end I convinced her to see me in six months, when I would show her how well the low carb diet works and give her all the figures.

My dietician doesn't want to see me for a year, as they can't help me. Obviously can't sanction me using the low carb diet to control my diabetes.

Hi Shaun and well done. I saw a dietician ONCE. Complete waste of time, in fact following her advice i got the worst recordings I've had. It was only when I found out about carbs that i got things under control. Trouble is, the dietician is just repeating what they've been trained to say, so until that changes, we'll continue to get frowns at the mention of low carbs. As for age, you get young type 2s and old type 1s, so ferget that. Your meter tells you whether or not what you're doing is working, so stick to that.
