Hello there!

I wish to make everyone aware of two online petitions I have recently started for the good of diabetics. I have to get 100,000 signatures in order to get them discussed in parliament. The links are:

I have to say that I think your second petition is nonsense. You've made exactly the same error that many rail against on here and haven't specified why a type 2 diabetic that doesn't use insulin should be exempt from the sugar tax. Why should they?
 
Sorry if I sound thick but I thought it was the manufacturers that pay the tax not consumer?
Ok companies may relay that extra cost to the price of any of their goods for sale, even sugar free ones. Or have I got it all wrong?
Look. Read what most type1s and insulin dependant type2s have to say about it. Some eat jelly babies or other aids to restore their levels to good state. We/they aren't solely dependant on lucozade for the remedy. Loads of other glucose filled products do the job nicely. Myself I eat protein, but not recommed it to fast acting level dips. I use a mixed insulin pen and my severe insulin resistance allows me a slow effect on my bg levels. Every diabetic manages their diabetes differently.
 
Seriously? The cost of writing/processing the prescription would cost more than the tablets!
 
Are you serious? I buy a pack of Dextrose tablets for around 65p and sometimes 2-packs are around the same price. How often do we need to consume a packet for a hypo?

Hi Angie, sorry but I don't agree with either, it's not viable. We can eat either jelly babies, dolly mixtures, glucotabs and all of these are not extortionately priced.
 
I'm with robinredbreast . On advice I bought a tin of glucose sweets six months ago. Not expensive. As yet have had no need to open the tin. Will I ever ? I will leave them in my will to you.

By the way. Diabetics don't use much sugar so why would they wish to get it free of tax ?

I am a type 1 diabetic so like other type 1s do suffer hypos at lot more more than type 2s. My son is one also and my mum has type 2. I have to carry a glucose supply at all times. There are certain times when diabetics are more at risk than other times, especially when doing sports eg swimming, running or things like gardening which may not sound strenuous but believe me it can send your glucose level into your boots. In the past I have been unconscious due to a low glucose and it can cause fits if not caught in time. My main concern is that the treatment for a hypo is expensive when in its pure form but it acts more quickly than just eating sweets. Families on low incomes especially will find it hard as the tablets are around 70p a pack containing around 13 tablets. Glucose drinks eg Lucozade are an easy way to get the glucose level up and why should we pay more for something that is already expensive and is a treatment for what sometimes is a daily occurrence. I am just hoping to get support for something that at the moment is expensive to treat and I feel very strongly about.
 
@AngeDM if you are getting a lot of hypos maybe you could adjust your diet to lower carb? The less carbs you have the less margin for error with your insulin doses and therefore the less hypos. I realise you will still get some hypos but you may get less of them and therefore save a bit of cash on the hypo treatment. Unless you have brittle diabetes I don't believe daily hypos should be viewed as normal even for T1s . It must be exhausting for you.
 
@AngeDM some type1s need to amend their eating habits to help with too many hypos. Type2s have to amend their eating habits to help with too many hypers! Type2s on insulin have to do both just like type1s. Some type2s have damaged cells in their pancreas or liver so control is hard work like some type1s. Some type1s and 2s have insulin resistance and damaged beta cells.
We are all different but the same fight.
 
I'm sure the OP and all of us understand that all types of diabetes are hard work, and come with their own problems, which may vary from person to person.

Just because something works for one person, doesn't mean it'll work for another. All our experiences are valid.

People can have hypos through no fault of their own. Many hypos are not due to mistakes in insulin dosing. Some people can have sudden, severe hypos through no fault of their own. A hypo with a seizure is terrifying.

@AngeDM The JDRF have commented on the sugar tax.
