I was just wondering if anybody really knew if there's anything to be particularly cautious of with diabetes type 1 when you're abroad in hot climates. I've been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes for over a year now and I was hoping to go on holiday soon - but I just wondered if there's anything you have to be extremely cautious of, or avoid when you're abroad?

Keep insulin cool and protected from sun otherwise it may spoil. Your basal insulin needs will probably reduce in a hot climate.

The other advice is the same for any holiday: Carry spare supplies in two different items of luggage. Carry your prescription. All insulin carry in carry on luggage not the cargo hold. Test frequently while travelling and carry hypo supplies as stress and change in routine makes hypos more likely. Make sure you have travel insurance and wear a diabetes ID.

Then there's time zones and long haul flights but that's another story

Do you have to take a medical prescription to explain the reason you have needles in your hand luggage? I find that the heat always makes me more prone to hypos!

Yes and also in case you need emergency supplies.

The proneness to hypos is because your basal needs drop. So if you keep your basal rate the same hypos will be more likely.
