Hi, this is my 1st post. I'm 42 this year, have been Diabetic for 10+ years and until 3/4 weeks ago (I've been I've been on Metformin 1000mg 3x a day, Gliclazide 160mg 2x a day and also taking a weekly Exentide injection (My Dr changed me from Exentide onto insulin 15 units a day), still on Metformin 1000mg 3x a day, Gliclazide 160mg 2x a day, Indapamide 2.5mg, Amlodapine 10mg, Naproxen 500mg in the morning and at night, Ramapril 10mg, Simvistatin 10mg at night, Quinine sulphate 1x300mg(for cramp at night), Omperzole 500mg at night.

I am also taking Amitriptyline 75mg at night for Neuropathy in my right leg (that was stable for some time), in the last 3/4 I told my Dr I had some general numbness in both my little fingers, I was referred to hospital and had some nerve tests done (was told there was mild case, nothing more was done).
About 4 weeks ago the numbness increased in both hands really badly, can't straighten both hands and if I do, they curl back up. My Dr then put me on gabapentin which started at one a day and increased up to three, three times a day, but symptoms didn't change (hand wise) (My leg became a lot worse).
I was told to stop taking them slowly, my leg felt a lot better (when I was taking the gabapentin, I couldn't walk more than 50 metres without being in incredible pain.
My Dr has referred me back to have more nerve studies done and referrer me back to the diabetic consultant (I was being seen at the clinic, but was discharged as was going to have bariatric surgery, still waiting, been approved, but not had surgery yet), and they have decided not prescribe any other tablets until I've been seen by both consultants, whilst waiting for this both my hands are very painful and as my job is a floor walker/cashier at an amusement arcade, with the fact that I can't walk/stand for long (feel unsteady on my feet or count money, I'm left in a position that I hate (being signed off work).

I've tried to include as much information as possible, but I was just hoping that someone might know something from either family, friends or work colleagues and have have any experience or tips that could help.

Many thanks in advance.

Do you know what your typical hba1c is? Have you also checked the dr bernstein diabetes solution book? He reversed alot of the problems you describe by gaining much better blood sugars.

you will find it easier with insulin doses on a Low carb diet, the problem is it's the opposite of what you may have been told to eat.
I would ask to be referred to a diabetic hospital clinic, high BG is dangerous and you may need more insulin.

Hi adrianmorgan, ask your GP to test your B12 as metformin can cause low B12 and lack of B12 can cause neuropathy.

Hi, sorry for the delay in replying. I asked about the B12, it was low in 2013, I'm getting new bloods taken in a few weeks and they said they will test for the B12.

My last last hba1c was 95. My legs still feel shaky (a little wobbly when I first stand up, mild numbness and shaky when I start to walk, a bit like jelly). 100% better since I stopped taking the Gabapentin, even thou it's supposed to work together with the Amitriptyline, my only advice is if your Dr tells you they should work together, and you feel that it's not working (don't do what I did and keep taking it, Drs can get it wrong).

My last six blood sugars were 10.4 mmol, 15.5 mmol, 9.9 mmol, 10.2 mmol, 16.9 mmol after dinner last night and 13.1 mmol before having my meal this afternoon. I'm injecting insulin twice a day at the moment of 8 units morning and 8 in the evening, whilst still taking Metformin, Glicazide.

My hands are still numb, but the good news is I'm going back to work on Next week.

Adrian I noticed you are to have gastric bariatric surgery. Have you tried LCHF? If not you could give it a try before the surgery. It has happened that people find they loose a lot of weight at a steady pace and in the end don't need the surgery.

LCHF, if you aren't familiar with the concept, is when you go low carb and eat fat instead of carbs, normal amount of protein. The only thing you restrict are the carbs, you don't restrict calories.
